NFL PREVIEWS- Week Eight

The man, the quarterback, the legend...
Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin will be rocking big time on Sunday afternoon as the Minnesota Vikings play the Green Bay Packers for the second time in a month.
Last month, on a Monday night in Minneapolis, the Vikings, led by former Packer Favre, beat their hated rival 30-23 in the highest rated Monday Night Football game ever!
Think about that for a minute. The Packers and Vikings played on Monday Night Football, which has been a staple of the NFL for 40 years now and this one game with Favre facing his old team for the first time was THE highest rated Monday night game ever.
So what should football fans expect on Sunday afternoon in Cheeseland?
You know Favre will be cranked up and ready to make it two in a row over Green Bay, but the Pack will have other ideas as they do not want to see number four in purple come into their place and walk away with a win. After all, the Vikings lead the NFC North with a 6-1 record and the Packers (4-2) cannot afford to fall any further behind the Vikings.
The Packers are a three-point favorite because of "home field" advantage. However, look for Favre to find a way to pull this one out on national television once again.
The guy has a flare for the dramatic and the perfect scenario would have the Packers leading by six points (say 27-21) with two minutes and change remaining in the game.
That's when Favre goes to work with the crowd going nuts and Favre calling out the signals and driving his troops down the field as the clock ticks down... the Vikings have just one timeout remaining after Favre hits Percy Harvin for a 32-yard gain to get things moving to the Green Bay 48-yard line.
Two Minute Warning!
Knowing the Vikings need a touchdown, the Packers unleash the blitz and number four is dropped for a seven yard loss back at his own 45.
Second and 17 yards to go and then A.J. Hawk, Green Bay's stud linebacker has one in his hands for a sure interception but cannot hang on and it's now third and 17 for Minnesota.
Favre is flushed out of the pocket on third down and throws a short pass to running back Adrian Peterson, who scoots for a 12-yard gain before being pushed out of bounds at the Packers 43-yard line with 1:24 to play.
Fourth down and five for Minnesota and Green Bay again brings the blitz, but this time it's picked up and Favre hits tight end Vinsanthe Shiancoe for a 6-yard gain to keep the drive alive.
Favre spikes the ball to stop the clock with 1:02 to go... second and ten and a draw play gains five as Peterson is tackled in the middle of the field... Time Out Minnesota!
Third and five for Favre and company from the Packers' 32 with 38 ticks remaining.
An out route to Percy Harvin for a 16-yard gain to the Green Bay 16-yard line with 29 seconds left... the crowd is not as noisy now, but the Packers defense urges them on and they begin to respond as the Packers break the huddle and Favre calls the signals... incomplete pass ... another incompletion... third down and ten with 17 seconds left.
Favre is being chased and lets a pass go to the goal line which is batted up in the air and hauled down at the one-yard line by wide receiver Sidney Rice. The Vikings line up and quickly spike the ball to kill the clock with six seconds left and the ball just inside the Green Bay one-yard line.
Everyone in Lambeau is expecting Peterson to get the ball as the Vikings come to the line of scrimmage.
Favre checks things over as he barks the signals and when the ball is snapped, it is number four lunging forward over his line and sneaking it in for the touchdown with two seconds left.
The extra point is good and Minnesota wins a nail biter 28-27 as Favre does it yet again.

As for the rest of the action in the NFL this Sunday... stay tuned and here goes nothing (again) as the winners are selected for Week Eight ...

WORLD SERIES PREVIEW

The 2009 World Series is scheduled to begin tonight and the New York Yankees are the big favorites against the Philadelphia Phillies, the team which won the World Series one year ago.
The Phillies will not be intimidated by the Yankees, winners of 26 World Series, including three in succession from 1998-2000.
Both teams feature formidable lineups and good starting pitching. The Yankees have the advantage in the bullpen as the Phillies had a roller coaster season with closer Brad Lidge while Mariano Rivera, the Yankees' closer, just may be the best ever in this category.
Game One (at Yankee Stadium) will see two former teammates facing each other on the pitchers' mound as Cliff Lee starts for the Philadelphia Phillies while C.C. Sabathia takes the mound for the New York Yankees.
This will tell a lot regarding the World Series outcome as teams that win Game One generally have success when the dust is settled.
The matchups for Games Two and Three will be intriguing as well as Pedro Martinez, a Yankee nemesis from his days with Boston, will start Game Two for the Phils and A.J. Burnett will start for the Bronx Bombers. Andy Pettitte will start for the Yankees when the Series moves to Philadelphia and hitter friendly Citizens Bank Ball Park while Cole Hamels, last year's World Series MVP, will pitch for the Phillies.
There is the possibility that Sabathia and Lee could square off three times if the World Series goes the entire seven games.
The matchups at the plate has two teams that can flat out hit the stuffing out of the baseball as evidenced by the production they had from their lineups in 2009.
The Yankees (103-59 in regular season) have Mark Teixiera (39 HRs, 122 RBI, .292 BA) in the middle of the lineup along with Alex Rodriguez (30, 100, .286) and Hideki Matsui (28, 90, .274) and Derek Jeter, who seems to have been around forever with the Yankees, leads off after hitting .334 with 18 HRs and 66 RBI to go with 30 stolen bases.

Johnny Damon (24, 82, .282) is the perfect complement in the two-hole behind Jeter and the rest of the lineup is exceptional as well. Jorge Posada (22, 81, .285), Robinson Cano (25, 85, .320), Nick Swisher (29, 82, .249) and Melky Cabrera (13, 68, .274) round out the six through nine slots and the 'Bombers also have Jerry Hairston, Jr. and Eric Hinske off the bench.
The Phillies have Jimmy Rollins (21, 77, .250 and 31 stolen bases) and Shane Victorino (10, 62, .292, 25 steals) at the top of the lineup and these two are as good as any in the major leagues at getting on base and making things happen.
Chase Utley (31, 93, .282, 23 steals) Ryan Howard (45, 141. 279), Jayson Werth (36, 99, .268 and 20 steals) and Raul Ibanez (34, 93, .272) are the muscle in the middle and Pedro Feliz (12, 82, .266) and Carlos Ruiz (9, 43, .255) round out the lineup. When the teams play in New York, the Phillies' Designated Hitter will be either Ibanez or Matt Stairs, a cagey veteran who has been there many times and isn't afraid to swing the bat.
This is looking to be a classic World Series between the Yankees and the Phillies that could very well go the full seven games, something that has not happened since 2002.
Look for the teams to score lots of runs in Philly, and not as much in Yankee Stadium as the pitching matchups between Lee and Sabathia should help to keep the run totals down when they take to the mound.
The prediction here is for the underdog Philadelphia Phillies to repeat as World Series champions in six games.

NFL Football- Week Seven Review

There were blowouts galore on Sunday as the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints remained unbeaten while, at the same time the Minnesota Vikings and quarterback Brett Favre showed they are human in losing their first game of the season.

Colts roll over Rams- Behind three touchdown passes from Peyton Manning and a defense that limited the Rams (0-7) to 272 yards, the Indianapolis Colts improved to 6-0 with a 42-6 road victory over St. Louis ...

Steelers defense comes up big- Minnesota Vikings' QB Brett Favre fumbled when hit and threw an interception in the fourth quarter as the Steelers (5-2) took both turnovers and made them pay immediate dividends with touchdowns in a 27-17 win to knock Minnesota from unbeaten status ...

Pats cruise to victory overseas- The New England Patriots (5-2) overwhelmed Tampa Bay (0-7) in London, England 35-7 as Tom Brady finished with 308 yards passing and three TD strikes to three different receivers ...

Cowboys get back on stride- The Dallas Cowboys rolled to their second win in a row by knocking off the visiting Falcons, 37-21. Quarterback Tony Romo threw for 311 yards and hit wide receiver Miles Austin (six catches, 171 yards) twice for TDs, including a 59-yard score that put the 'Pokes up for good. The Dallas defense sacked Falcons' QB Matt Ryan four times to bolster the win ...

Packers smash Browns- Green Bay Packers' QB Aaron Rodgers had three TD passes for an easy victory on the road against Cleveland, 31-3 as the Browns (1-6) managed just 139 yards for the game ...

Texans break .500 mark- The Houston Texans improved to 4-3 and handed the 49ers their second consecutive defeat in Houston, 24-21 behind two touchdown passes from Matt Schaub and a touchdown by running back Steve Slaton. The 49ers (3-3) made a game of it in the second half as Alex Smith stepped in at quarterback and threw three TD passes to rally San Francisco before a late interception sealed the game ...

Jets bomb Raiders- The New York Jets snapped a three-game losing streak with a 38-0 shut out win at Oakland. Jets running back Thomas Jones rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown and rookie running back Shonn Greene gained 144 yards and scored two TDs in the rout. Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell was benched as Oakland (2-5) turned the ball over four times ...

Chargers jolt the Chiefs- San Diego bounced back from a disappointing home loss to improve to 3-3 with a 37-7 domination of the host Kansas City Chiefs. Chargers' QB Philip Rivers had three TD passes in the win, including a 58-yard scoring pass to Darren Sproles ...

Saints keep marching- The New Orleans Saints beat the host Miami Dolphins, 46-34 and improved to 6-0 as Drew Brees led the comeback on offense with two scoring runs and a TD pass to help offset the three interceptions he threw. The Dolphins led 24-3 in the second quarter, which saw Miami run the ball at will, including a 68-yard scoring romp by Rickey Williams. But along with Brees and the high powered offense, the Saints' defense also scored twice on interception returns in the second half comeback.

Bengals, Benson crush Bears- The Cincinnati Bengals (5-2) completely dominated the Chicago Bears, 45-10 as QB Carson Palmer threw five touchdown passes, including two to Chad Ochocinco and running back Cedric Benson (a former Bear) had a career best 189 yards rushing and a touchdown ...

Bills 'D' dominates- The Buffalo Bills rode a stingy defense for the second consecutive win an improved to 3-4 with the 20-9 road win at Carolina. Panthers' QB Jake Delhomme was intercepted three times by Buffalo's defense, which had five last week in a win over the New York Jets ...

Arizona rising- The Arizona Cardinals knocked off the New York Giants in the Sunday Night Game, 24-17 to improve to 4-2. The Giants (5-2) lost their second game in a row as QB Eli Manning was intercepted three times and running back Ahmad Bradshaw fumbled the ball in the final minutes as Arizona took over sole possession of first place in the NFC West.

More of the same in D.C.- The Redskins fell to 2-5 as the Eagles won 27-17 in Washington, D.C. on Monday Night Football as DeSean Jackson scored two touchdowns to lead the way for Philadelphia.

NFL FOOTBALL- Week Seven Previews

The 2009 NFL season is well into it now as six teams get their "bye" weeks in late October and the standings are taking shape. However, nothing has been certain this season, just look at the current standings for proof of that.
A rundown of the games this weekend ...

Chargers at Chiefs- San Diego has been disappointing, getting off to another slow start this year... so this (and every game for them) is a must-win with Denver being 6-0... the Chiefs won their first game of the season last week against the Redskins.

Vikings at Steelers- Easily the "Game of the Day" between these two teams. Vikings riding high with Adrian Peterson and Brett Favre and are 6-0 heading to Western PA to face the Steelers, winners of three in a row after a 1-2 start. Should be a great game between two defensive minded teams.

Patriots at Buccaneers- Since when is Tampa, FL located in the UK?
These two teams do the nonsense this year and fly over to London in the middle of the season to play a football game. The NFL needs to drop this stunt as it disrupts the flow of a team and there isn't that much interest in "American football" over seas... don't believe the hype as the professional football world tries to "expand" over seas.

49ers at Texans- The Niners were crushed heading into their bye week while the Texans cooled off the red-hot Cincinnati Bengals on the road last week behind solid defense and four TD passes from QB Matt Schaub.

Jets at Raiders- Will the real New York Jets please stand up?
The Raiders are breathing easier knowing they will have Head Coach Tom Cable on the sidelines and not behind bars after the DA announced they would not press charges on Cable after he allegedly punched out an assistant coach in August.

Bills at Panthers- Both teams coming off thrilling last-minute wins last weekend.

Saints at Dolphins- The Saints are rolling and are on pace to shatter the NFL single-season scoring record established by the 2007 Patriots... Dolphins are getting it going after a slow start and the high school offense known as the "Wildcat" has been effective for them... they will need it to be so once again to keep Drew Brees and Co. off the field so they don't score 40+ points as they did against the Giants last week.

Bears at Bengals- Cedric Benson is the third leading rusher in the NFL this season and the Bears have to be wondering where was this when he was a member of the Chicago franchise his first three years in the NFL? Should be a hard-hitting game.

Colts at Rams- Why bother?

Packers at Browns- Green Bay has a knack for taking opponents like the Cleveland Browns lightly and if they do that this week, it could cost them... they better be ready to play because the Browns are improving, somewhat.

Falcons at Cowboys- This game could go down to the wire if the Cowboys defense shows up and can limit Michael Turner on the ground. Dallas stopping the Atlanta ground attack is the KEY to this one.

Cardinals at Giants- The Sunday Night Game features two teams that have been questioned recently, especially the Giants after they were throttled last Sunday in New Orleans... The Red Birds rolled against Seattle on the road and now Kurt Warner brings the air attack to the Big Apple to face a ticked-off Giants defense.

Eagles at Redskins- The Monday Night Football game has the Redskins hosting the Eagles. Both teams layed an egg last week as the Redskins lost to the winless K.C. Chiefs in D.C. while the Eagles couldn't score a TD against Oakland in a 13-9 loss. This game could be a stinker.
