2025 NFL PREVIEW - Houston Texans

HOUSTON TEXANS

2024 Record - 10-7-0

Head Coach - DeMeco Ryans

2024 Offensive Rank - (22nd overall) - 320 YPG; Passing - 208 YPG (21st), Rushing -112 YPG (15th); SCORING - 21.9 PPG (19th)

2024 Defensive Rank - (6th overall) - 315 YPG; Passing - 201 YPG (6th), Rushing - 114 YPG (11th); SCORING - 21.9 PPG (14th)

Key Additions for 2025 - C.J. Gardner-Johnson (DB), Christian Kirk (WR), Cam Robinson (OL), E.J. Speed (LB), Laken Tomlinson (OL), Sheldon Rankins (DL)

Key Losses for 2025 - Laremy Tunsil (OL), Stefon Diggs (WR), Kenyon Green (OL), Shaq Mason (OL), Eric Murray (DB), Del'Shawn Phillips (LB), Robert Woods (WR)

OFFENSE - C.J. Stroud will be the starting quarterback as he goes into his third NFL season and he had 3,727 passing yards along with 20 touchdowns and twelve interceptions last year. He also rushed for 233 yards (4.5 YPC) but was sacked 54 times. The running game is hoping to have Joe Mixon back in the mix sooner rather than later as he will miss at least the first four games in 2025 because of ankle surgery. Mixon ran for 1,016 yards in 2024 and scored eleven touchdowns while averaging 4.1 yards per carry. Dameon Pierce (293, 7.3 YPC, two TD), Nick Chubb (332, 3.3 YPC, three TD with Cleveland) and perhaps rookie Woody Marks (USC) are the others who will run the ball. The wide receivers are Niko Collins (68 receptions, 1,006 yards, seven TD), Christian Kirk (27, 379, one TD with Jacksonville), Justin Watson (29, 282, two TD with Kansas City) and rookie Jayden Higgins (Iowa State) and possibly Tank Dell, who had 51 receptions for 667 yards and three scores before suffering a bad knee injury late last season that could keep him out for the entire 2025 season. The tight end is Dalton Schultz and he had 53 catches for 532 yards and two touchdowns last year.

DEFENSE - Danielle Hunter (12 QB sacks) and Will Anderson (11 sacks) lead the way on the defensive front line along with Tim Settle, Jr. (five sacks), Derek Barnett (five sacks) and Sheldon Rankins. The linebackers include Henry To'oTo'o (team high 104 tackles), Azeez Al-Shaair (70 tackles) and E.J. Speed, who had 143 tackles with Indianapolis last year. Nick Niemann and Christian Harris are also available. The secondary has Kamari Lassiter (three interceptions), Derrick Stingley, Jr. (five INT) and Jalen Pitre at the corners along with safeties C.J. Gardner-Johnson (six interceptions with Philadelphia) and Calen Bullock, who had five picks a year ago. Rookie cornerback Jaylin Smith (USC) will look to contribute this season. The Texans were plus-10 in turnovers last year while getting 19 interceptions (2nd in NFL) and 49 sacks, which ranked fourth overall.

OUTLOOK - Houston appears poised for a third consecutive AFC South crown as long as C.J. Stroud plays up to his abilities and gets better pass protection. The offensive line must improve and the running game could be a big question mark with Joe Mixon still out (ankle injury) as the season gets started. Former Pro Bowler Nick Chubb hasn't been the same since a serious knee injury two years ago and Dameon Pierce hasn't had much playing time with Houston. The offense has weapons in the passing game and Stroud and Collins have been a good combo in the last two seasons. Better red zone efficiency will go a long way to helping the Texans attack.

Head Coach DeMeco Ryans thrives on strong defense and the Texans were a top ten unit last year and now have C.J. Gardner-Johnson in the secondary after a Super Bowl winning season with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Texans will look to have the same ball hawking defense in 2025 and with Will Anderson and Danielle Hunter leading the charge up front, the pass rush should be good once again. Stopping the run better will be a focus in 2025 as well, but this team is looking to go further in January after blasting the L.A. Chargers (including four interceptions on defense) in the wild card round and giving Kansas City a tough battle in the divisional round. Don't sleep on the Texans as they could be a pleasant surprise this time around if things break their way come playoff time.

2025 NFL PREVIEW - Detroit Lions

DETROIT LIONS

2024 Record - 15-2-0

Head Coach - Dan Campbell

2024 Offensive Rank - (2nd overall) - 409 YPG; Passing - 263 YPG (2nd), Rushing - 146 YPG (6th); SCORING - 33.2 PPG (1st)

2024 Defensive Rank - (20th overall) - 342 YPG; Passing - 244 YPG (30th), Rushing - 98.4 YPG (5th); SCORING - 20.1 PPG (7th)

Key Additions for 2025
- D.J. Reed, Jr. (DB), Roy Lopez (DL), Grant Stuard (LB), Rock Ya-Sin (DB)

Key Losses for 2025 - Kevin Zeitler (OL), Carlton Davis III (DB), Za'Darius Smith (DL), Kindle Vildor (DB)

OFFENSE - Quarterback Jared Goff passed for 4,629 yards with 37 touchdowns and had 12 interceptions a year ago. His main targets in the Lions passing game are wideouts Amon-Ra St. Brown (115 receptions, 1,263 yards, 12 TD), Jameson Williams (58, 1,001, seven TD) and tight end Sam LaPorta, who had 60 receptions for 726 yards and seven touchdowns. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 1,412 yards (5.6 YPC) and scored 16 touchdowns while also adding four more (receiving) scores along with 52 receptions for 517 yards. David Montgomery had 775 rushing yards (4.2 YPC) and scored twelve touchdowns.

DEFENSE - Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson was limited to five games because of a broken leg, but he still had a team leading 7 1/2 quarterback sacks last season. Nose tackle Alim McNeill is coming off a knee injury and he had 3 1/2 sacks. Marcus Davenport and Tyleik Williams round out the front four. Linebackers include Jack Campbell (125 tackles) along with outside backers Derrick Barnes and Alex Anzalone. The defensive backfield features safeties Kerby Joseph (NFL leading nine interceptions) and Brian Branch, who picked off four passes last year. The corners are Terrion Arnold and D.J. Reed, Jr. while Khalil Dorsey, Morice Norris and Amik Robertson add depth in the secondary. In 2024, the Lions intercepted 16 passes and amassed 37 sacks.

OUTLOOK - With both team coordinators gone, Head Coach Dan Campbell will look for the offensive machine to continue to roll (Detroit led the NFL in scoring last year) while the defense looks to remain steady. The Lions had a solid run defense in 2024, but the pass defense was lacking in giving up big plays even while frequently intercepting opposing quarterbacks. Having Aidan Hutchinson back in the fold will help big time in putting pressure on opponents. Improved defense will be the key for the Lions this season, especially if they make the playoffs again.

On offense, quarterback Jared Goff has so many weapons it is almost ridiculous. The running game as well as the passing attack are top ten qualities for the team, so as long as the Lions can avoid injuries, they should continue to mix it up and light up the scoreboard. The problem in the Motor City the last two years has been the post-season as they blew a big lead to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC title game two years ago and last year in the divisional round were ambushed by the Washington Commanders and rookie QB Jayden Daniels while playing on their home turf. The Lions have the potential to reach the Super Bowl, but they have to make it happen once the playoffs arrive. It's up to them to make it happen, the time is now and the hype machine must follow up this time around.

2025 NFL PREVIEW - Tennessee Titans

TENNESSEE TITANS

2024 Record - 3-14-0

Head Coach - Brian Callahan

2024 Offensive Rank
- (26th overall) - 304 YPG; Passing - 195 YPG (26th), Rushing - 109 YPG; SCORING - 18.3 PPG (27th)

2024 Defensive Rank - (2nd overall) - 311 YPG; Passing - 177 YPG (2nd), Rushing - 134 YPG (26th); SCORING - 27.1 PPG (30th)

Key Additions for 2025 - Cam Ward (rookie - Miami, FL), Van Jefferson (WR), Cody Barton (LB), Lorenzo Carter (LB), Tyler Lockett (WR), Dan Moore (OL), Xavier Woods (DB), Kevin Zeitler (OL), Dre'Mont Jones (DL)

Key Losses for 2025 - Harold Landry III (LB), Nick Westbrook-Ikhine (WR), Nick Vannett (TE), Kenneth Murray, Jr. (LB), Tyler Boyd (WR), Nicholas Petit-Frere (OL), Mason Rudolph (QB), Dillon Radunz (OL), Daniel Brunskill (OL)

OFFENSE
- Rookie quarterback Cam Ward (top draft pick from Miami, Florida) will take over this season as the starter. Will Levis is out for the season following shoulder surgery, so the backup QB will likely be Brandon Allen. The running game has Tony Pollard as the lead back and he went for 1,079 yards (4.2 YPC) and five touchdowns a year ago. Tyjae Spears (312 yards, 3.7 YPC, four TD) is also on hand this season. The wide receivers are Calvin Ridley (64 receptions, 1,017 yards, four TD), Van Jefferson (24, 276, two TD with Pittsburgh) and Tyler Lockett, who played with Seattle last season and had 49 receptions for 600 yards and two touchdowns. Chig Okwonko (52, 479, two TD) is the tight end.

DEFENSE - Jeffery Simmons (76 tackles, five QB sacks), T'Vondre Sweat and Sebastian Joseph-Day lead the defensive front line and the linebackers are Cody Barton, Arden Key (6 1/2 sacks), James Williams and Dre'Mont Jones. In the secondary is safety Amani Hooker, who had five interceptions last year. Also in the mix is safety Xavier Woods (three INT with Carolina) and Quandre Diggs. The corners are Darrell Baker Jr., Jarvis Brownlee, Jr. (74 tackles), L'Jarius Sneed and Roger McCreary. The Titans had 32 sacks last year and eleven interceptions.

OUTLOOK - This season will be an interesting one for the Titans as they are going with the top draft pick in QB Cam Ward leading the offense. Head Coach Bill Callahan is in his second season and is looking for the team to improve on the three wins from last year. Tennessee ranked near the bottom of the league in every offensive category except for rushing. If Ward gets the protection (Titans allowed 52 sacks in 2024) there is definitely potential for a big time passing attack with two proven wideouts and a third who has shown flashes when healthy. Tennessee had six one-score defeats last year, so closing games could lead to a much better record if things come together for them.

The defense was stellar a year ago, finishing second overall and against the pass. The run defense was weak and the Titans allowed too many touchdowns, which placed them 30th in the NFL in scoring defense. That must change if they expect to make a big leap into contention in a relatively weak AFC South division. The Houston Texans are the top dog in the division, but they can challenge Jacksonville and Indianapolis and perhaps finish second this year. The key will be improvement on offense, particularly in the red zone and avoiding too many turnovers as the Titans were minus-16 last year in that area. Look for an improved record in 2025, but the playoffs will be a very big reach.

2025 NFL PREVIEW - San Francisco 49ers

SAN FRANCISCO 49ers

2024 Record
- 6-11-0

Head Coach - Kyle Shanahan

2024 Offensive Rank - (4th overall) - 376 YPG; Passing - 249 YPG (4th), Rushing - 127 YPG (12th); SCORING - 22.9 PPG (13th)

2024 Defensive Rank - (8th overall) - 317 YPG; Passing - 193 YPG (5th), Rushing - 124 YPG (18th); SCORING - 25.6 PPG (27th)

Key Additions for 2025 - Mykel Williams (rookie - Georgia), Mac Jones (QB), Tre Brown (DB), Demarcus Robinson (WR), Jason Pinnock (DB), Nicholas Petit-Frere (OL)

Key Losses for 2025 - Dre Greenlaw (LB), Deebo Samuel (WR), Maliek Collins (DL), Jordan Mason (RB), Aaron Banks (OL), De'Vondre Campbell (LB), Leonard Floyd (DL), Charvarius Ward (DB)

OFFENSE - Quarterback Brock Purdy is back for his fourth NFL season and last year he passed for 3,864 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions as well as rushing for 323 yards (4.9 YPC) and he scored five touchdowns. Mac Jones (1,672 passing yards, eight TD, eight INT) came over from Jacksonville and will be the backup. Running backs include Christian McCaffrey, who is coming back from multiple injuries last season. If he's not quite up to his past standards, then Isaac Guerendo (420 rushing yard, 5.0 YPC, four TD), Patrick Taylor, Jr. and rookie Jordan James (Oregon) will be ready to go. The fullback is Kyle Jusczyk. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk (25 receptions for 374 yards in seven games) missed most of the 2024 season and along with Jauan Jennings (77, 975, six TD), Demarcus Robinson (31, 505, seven TD with L.A. Rams), Ricky Pearsall, Jr. (31, 400, three TD) and rookie Jordan Watkins (Mississippi) will be looking to bounce back strong. The tight end is George Kittle, who caught 78 passes for 1,106 yards and eight scores last year.

DEFENSE - Edge rusher Nick Bosa (nine QB sacks) leads the way up front along with tackles Jordan Elliott and Kevin Givens. Rookie (DE/linebacker) Mykel Williams (Georgia) will be relied on as will Robert Beal, Jr. and Sam Okuayinonu. The linebackers are Luke Gifford, Fred Warner (team high 131 tackles and two interceptions) and Dee Winters. In the secondary are corners Renardo Green and Deommodore Lenoir (85 tackles, two interceptions) and safeties Ji'Ayir Brown and Jason Pinnock. Tre Brown and rookie Upton Stout (Western Kentucky) add depth and should contribute.

OUTLOOK - The 49ers fell off big time in the 2024 season, but a lot of that was because of injuries, which reflected on quarterback Brock Purdy because of his primary target Brandon Aiyuk, who only played in seven games while McCaffrey suited up just four times. In the off-season, Deebo Samuel was dealt to Washington, but flashy WR Demarcus Robinson arrives from the Rams and will be available following a three-game suspension from the NFL.

Coming into 2025, 'Niners Head Coach Kyle Shanahan knows what's in store if too many key players miss playing time again. The L.A. Rams won the NFC West last year and along with Seattle and perhaps an improved looking Arizona team, San Francisco could be in for another dismal year. There are questions regarding overall team health, but this team knows how to win and just two years ago they were in the Super Bowl. Look for Purdy to shine once all the starters are in tow. San Francisco has had many wide receivers nursing some sort of injury throughout the pre-season. Tight End George Kittle will be a primary target once again in the passing game and also look for rookie running back Jordan James to help McCaffrey out with the rushing attack.

The defense went through a lot of changes with people leaving and new players coming on board. Better red zone defense is necessary along with creating more turnovers. The team had just eleven interceptions last year (minus-10 in turnovers) and only 37 sacks. Maintaining health and playing better in divisional games, where the 49ers were 1-5 last year, would go a long way to getting back into the playoffs. It could be a big season or perhaps another dud for the 'Niners this year, but as long as they are intact and can maintain consistent efforts on both sides of the ball, they should be in good shape when January rolls around.

2025 NFL PREVIEW - Cleveland Browns

CLEVELAND BROWNS

2024 Record - 3-14-0

Head Coach - Kevin Stefanski

2024 Offensive Rank - (28th overall) 301 YPG; Passing - 206 YPG (22nd), Rushing - 95 YPG (29th); SCORING - 15.2 PPG (32nd)

2024 Defensive Rank - (19th overall) - 342 YPG; Passing - 212 YPG (12th), Rushing - 130 YPG (21st); SCORING - 25.6 PPG (27th)

Key Additions for 2025 - Mason Graham (rookie - Michigan), Joe Flacco (QB), Maliek Collins (DL), Rayshawn Jenkins (DB), Teven Jenkins (OL), Diontae Johnson (WR), Joe Tryon-Shoyinka (LB)

Key Losses for 2025 - James Hudson III (OL), Elijah Moore (WR), Za'Darius Smith (DL), Dalvin Tomlinson (DL), Jameis Winston (QB), Nick Chubb (RB), Jordan Akins (TE),

OFFENSE - Joe Flacco, the 18-year veteran quarterback, has been named the starter for this season. Last year with the Indianapolis Colts, Flacco threw for 1,761 yards with 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions in eight games. There are two rookie quarterbacks in camp this year and either Dillon Gabriel (Oregon) or Shedeur Sanders (Colorado) will serve as the backups. Jerome Ford led the team in rushing last year with 565 yards (5.4 YPC) and scored three touchdowns. Also in the backfield are Pierre Strong, Jr. along with rookies Quinshon Judkins (Ohio State) and Dylan Sampson (Tennessee). The wide receiving corps is led by Jerry Jeudy (90 receptions, 1,229 yards, four TD) along with Jamari Thrash, Cedric Tillman and Diontae Johnson, who had 33 receptions last season for 375 yards with three scores. Tight end David Njoku enters his ninth season and in 2024 he led the team with five touchdown receptions and had 64 total receptions for 505 yards.

DEFENSE - The Browns defense is led up front by All Pro defensive end Myles Garrett, who had 14 quarterback sacks. Also playing on the line are Maliek Collins, Ogbo Okoronkwo and rookie DT Mason Graham (Michigan). The linebackers include Jordan Hicks (78 tackles), Carson Schwesinger, Devin Bush and Jerome Baker. In the secondary is cornerback Denzel Ward, who had two interceptions a year ago along with corners Martin Emerson, Jr. (80 tackles) and Greg Newsome.  The safeties are Grant Delpit (team high 108 tackles), Ronnie Hickman, Jr. and eight-year veteran Rayshawn Jenkins. Cleveland only had (league lowest) four interceptions last season along with 41 sacks.

OUTLOOK - After making the playoffs two years ago with Flacco playing quarterback (after coming out of retirement) the Browns took a huge step backward in 2024, finishing at or near the bottom of the NFL in numerous offensive categories. Head Coach Kevin Stefanski is now in his sixth season in Cleveland and has no less than five quarterbacks on the team (for now) with many question marks facing the team this year. The Browns play in the rugged AFC North, where Baltimore, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh loom large.

The offense has a lot of work to do in 2025 and protecting both the football (Cleveland was an NFL worst minus-22 in turnovers last season) and their quarterback will be the primary goals. Cleveland signal callers were sacked 66 times last year. Only the Chicago Bears were worst in that area. The Browns only scored 15.2 points per game (32nd) and that must improve. The passing attack was adequate a year ago, but still needs to do more. Defensively, Cleveland was mediocre on paper, but tended to get burned by big plays and the red zone efficiency wasn't real good.

If the Browns can manage to double their three-win total from last year, that would be decent progress as they have so many new faces on the roster in 2025, including a second tour of duty from Flacco at quarterback. Perhaps they could spring some surprises, but the likelihood is another last place finish this year.

2025 NFL PREVIEW - Los Angeles Rams

LOS ANGELES RAMS

2024 Record - 10-7-0

Head Coach - Sean McVay

2024 Offensive Rank - (15th overall) - 331 YPG; Passing - 227 YPG, Rushing - 104 YPG; SCORING - 21.6 PPG (20th)

2024 Defensive Rank - (26th overall) - 353 YPG; Passing - 223 YPG (20th), Rushing - 130 (22nd); SCORING - 22.7 PPG (17th)

Key Additions for 2025
- Poona Ford (DL), Davante Adams (WR), Coleman Shelton (OL), Nate Landman (LB), Terrance Ferguson (rookie - Oregon), Jarquez Hunter (rookie - Auburn)

Key Losses for 2025 - Cooper Kupp (WR), Bobby Brown III (DL), Demarcus Robinson (WR), Christian Rozeboom (LB), Michael Hoecht (LB)

OFFENSE - Matthew Stafford will be entering his 17th NFL season at quarterback and last season for the Rams he had 3,762 passing yards with 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Jimmy Garoppolo is the backup quarterback. Running backs include Kyren Williams, who led the team with 1, 299 yards along with 14 touchdowns and 4.1 yards per carry average. Others in the fold are rookie Jarquez Hunter (Auburn), Blake Corum (207 rushing yards, 3.6 YPC last year) and Ronnie Rivers, who averaged 4.5 yards per carry in limited action. The wide receivers are Puka Nacua, who had 79 receptions for 990 yards and three touchdowns (in eleven games), Tutu Atwell (42, 562) and Davante Adams, who had 85 receptions for 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns while playing for the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Jets last year. The tight ends include Tyler Higbee, Colby Parkinson and rookie Terrance Ferguson (Oregon).

DEFENSE - Kobie Turner (eight QB sacks), Poona Ford and Braden Fiske (8 1/2 sacks) lead the defensive front and the linebackers are Nate Landman (80 tackles with Atlanta), Omar Speights, Jared Verse and Byron Young, who had 7 1/2 sacks last season. In the secondary, safeties Quentin Lake (111 tackles) and Karmen Curl (79 tackles) lead the way along with corners Darious Williams and Ahkello Witherspoon. Safeties Kamren Kinchens and Jaylen McCollough each had four interceptions for a defense that collected 13 picks a year ago along with 38 sacks.

OUTLOOK - The Rams have made the playoffs numerous times since Head Coach Sean McVay took over back in 2017, including a Super Bowl title following the 2021 season. They are expecting to make the post-season yet again this year and as long as QB Matthew Stafford is able to stay healthy (back issues have been bothering him in training camp), the Rams should be good to go when January rolls around.

The team didn't put up any eye popping numbers on either side of the ball last season, but after a 1-4 start they got hot in mid season and down the stretch as well and then nearly knocked off the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in snowy conditions in the divisional round of the NFC playoffs. In fact, they were outscored during the regular season, proving they were capable of winning close games, which got them into the playoffs. The offense adds veteran wide receiver Davante Adams to the mix after Cooper Kupp left for Seattle in the off-season. Adams and Puka Nacua give Stafford two consistent players to throw to this season and leading rusher Kyren Williams was a beast last season, providing the team with a good balance on offense.

If the team wants to to have sustained success this year, the defense must also step up and create turnovers again (L.A. was plus-6 last season) while improving against the run, where they ranked in the bottom third of the league. All in all, the NFC West looks to be wide open in 2025 and the Rams could make it two division titles in a row. It will not be easy, but expectations are high for the team and they should be playing in the post-season again. How far they can go will depend on Stafford and company making things happen in crunch time.

OFFENSE - Quarterback Justin Herbert is entering his sixth season and last year he had 23 touchdown passes and just three interceptions along with 3,870 passing yards. He also rushed for 306 yards (4.4 YPC) and scored two touchdowns. The running game gets two new players this season as rookie Omarion Hampton (North Carolina) and Najee Harris (1,043 rushing yards, 4.0 YPC, six TD with the Pittsburgh Steelers) will be the primary backs after J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards left in free agency. The wide receivers are Ladd McConkey, who had a big rookie season with 82 receptions for 1,149 yards and seven touchdowns, along with Keenan Allen, who returns to the Chargers after one season with the Chicago Bears. Allen had 70 receptions for 744 yards and seven touchdowns last year. Quentin Johnston had 55 receptions for 711 yards and eight touchdowns. Rookies Tre Harris (Mississippi) and Keandre Lambert-Smith (Auburn) will be in the mix as well. The tight ends are Will Dissly (50, 481, two TD) and Tyler Conklin, who had 51 catches for 449 yards and four touchdowns with the N.Y. Jets last year.

DEFENSE - The Chargers will feature Teair Tart (nose tackle), Da'Shawn Hand and Otito Ogbonnia up front while 12-year veteran Khalil Mack (six QB sacks), Tuli Tuipolotu (8 1/2 sacks), Daiyan Henley (team high 142 tackles), Bud Dupree (six sacks) and Denzel Perryman are the linebackers. Safety Derwin James (93 tackles), along with corners Tarheeb Still (four interceptions), Cam Hart, Elijah Molden (three picks and 72 tackles) and Donte Jackson (five interceptions with the Pittsburgh Steelers) lead the secondary. Safeties Alohi Gilman, Tony Jefferson II and rookie R.J. Mickens (Clemson) and cornerback Benjamin St-Juste (free agent signee from Washington) add depth. The Chargers had 46 sacks and 15 interceptions last year while being a plus-12 in turnovers.

OUTLOOK - The Chargers surprised some folks by making the playoffs in the first year for Head Coach Jim Harbaugh, who has a history of turning teams around at both the pro and collegiate levels. Harbaugh loves to run the football and has two new running backs in tow this season. Unfortunately, the Bolts offensive line took a big hit when left tackle Rashawn Slater was lost for the season with a knee injury in training camp. However, with quarterback Justin Herbert running the show, the offense should be solid yet again.

Defensively, the Chargers led the NFL in scoring defense in 2024, allowing 17.7 points per game while ranking in the top ten against the pass and in forcing turnovers. They can pressure opposing quarterbacks and Derwin James leads a hard hitting secondary. Opponents still ran effectively against the Chargers last season, so that is an area that needs to improve. As long as Herbert protects the ball (he was intercepted four times in the playoff loss to Houston after throwing just three picks during the regular season) and the running game keeps improving, it should be another playoff appearance for this team.

Whether or not the Chargers can dethrone the Kansas City Chiefs as AFC West champions remains to be seen, but getting back to the playoffs is the priority. The first three games this season will be huge as they are against all three AFC West foes. Barring injuries to key players, the talent is there for a solid season and perhaps the Chargers can finally get a playoff win in the Justin Herbert era. Stay tuned.

2025 NFL PREVIEW - New Orleans Saints

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS

2024 Record - 5-12 -0

Head Coach - Kellen Moore

2024 Offensive Rank - (21st overall) - 320 YPG; Passing - 205 YPG (23rd), Rushing - 115 YPG (14th); SCORING - 19.9 PPG (24th)

2024 Defensive Rank - (30th overall) - 380 YPG; Passing - 239 YPG (27th), Rushing - 141 YPG (31st); SCORING - 23.4 PPG (19th)

Key Additions for 2025 - Justin Reid (DB), Tyler Shough (rookie - Louisville), Davon Godchaux (DL), Brandin Cooks (WR), Dillon Radunz (OL)

Key Losses for 2025 - Derek Carr (QB), Tyrann Mathieu (DB), Willie Gay, Jr. (LB), Will Harris (DB), Lucas Patrick (OL), Marquez Valdes-Scantling (WR), Jamaal Williams (RB)

OFFENSE - The Saints saw former starting quarterback Derek Carr retire and now they have both Spencer Rattler and rookie Tyler Shough (Louisville) in camp, looking to become the starting quarterback. Jake Haener and even Taysom Hill (tight end) could also play the position at some point this season. Alvin Kamara is the top running back and in 2024 he rushed for 950 yards (4.2 YPC) and scored six touchdowns along with 68 receptions for 543 yards and two touchdowns. Others in the backfield could be Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Velus Jones, Jr. and rookie Devin Neal (Kansas). Tight end/QB Taysom Hill rushed for 278 yards last season (7.1 YPC) and scored six touchdowns. The wide receivers include Rashid Shaheed and Chris Olave (both coming off injury filled 2024 season), Brandin Cooks (26 receptions for 259 yards and three TD with Dallas), rookie Mason Tipton (Yale) and veteran Cedrick Wilson, Jr., who was with the Miami Dolphins last season. The tight ends are (Taysom) Hill, Juwan Johnson (50, 548, three TD) and Foster Moreau, who had 32 receptions for 413 yards and five touchdowns.

DEFENSE - Defensive ends Cameron Jordan and Bryan Bresee (7 1/2 QB sacks) and nose tackle Davon Godchaux lead the front line while the linebackers are Demario Davis (team high 136 tackles), Carl Granderson (5 1/2 sacks), Pete Werner (92 tackles) and sixth year veteran Chase Young, who had 5 1/2 sacks. The secondary lost Tyrann Mathieu (retirement) and Paulson Adebo (free agency) and will now feature Kool-Aid McKinstry, Alonte Taylor (89 tackles) and perhaps Rico Payton or rookie Quincy Riley (Lousiville) at the corners. The safeties are Justin Reid (85 tackles with Kansas City) and either Terrell Burgess, Ugo Amadi, J.T. Gray and rookie Jonas Sanker (Virginia). The New Orleans defense had 39 sacks last year and picked off 14 passes.

OUTLOOK - New Head Coach Kellen Moore comes into the season still working on who will be the Saints starting quarterback. The team has a lot of work ahead of them this season on both sides of the ball and it could be a long season. Playing in the NFC South, the Saints were 2-4 in division play last year, splitting games with Atlanta and Carolina, both of whom look to be much improved this season.

Whoever winds up playing quarterback will have some weapons with veteran RB Alvin Kamara and hopefully both (wide receivers) Shaheed and Olave back in form for the 2025 season. The defense needs work (the Saints ranked near the bottom of the league against both the run and pass) but did show some red zone strength a year ago, finishing 19th in points allowed. This will definitely be a rebuilding year in The Big Easy, so winning five games again would be a positive thing. Anything more than that should be considered as progress as the Saints look toward better days in  the future.

2025 NFL PREVIEW - Buffalo Bills

BUFFALO BILLS

2024 Record
- 13-4-0

Head Coach - Sean McDermott

2024 Offensive Rank
- (10th overall) - 359 YPG; Passing - 228 YPG (9th), Rushing - 131 YPG (9th); SCORING - 30.9 PPG (2nd)

2024 Defensive Rank - (17th overall) - 342 YPG; Passing - 226 YPG (24th), Rushing - 116 YPG (12th); SCORING - 21.6 PPG (11th)

Key Additions for 2025 - Josh Palmer (WR), Joey Bosa (DL), Elijah Moore (WR), Tre'Davious White (DB), Larry Ogunjobi (DL)

Key Losses for 2025 - Mack Hollins (WR), Amari Cooper (WR), Rasul Douglas (DB), Von Miller (DL), Quintin Morris (TE)

OFFENSE - Quarterback Josh Allen was the NFL Most Valuable Player last season and he had 3,731 passing yards along with 28 touchdowns and only six interceptions. He also rushed for 12 touchdowns and gained 531 yards, averaging 5.2 yards per carry. The Bills rushing attack is led by James Cook, who went for 1,009 yards (4.9 YPC) and score 16 touchdowns. Ray Davis chipped in with 442 yards (3.9 YPC) and scored three times. The wide receivers are Khalil Shakir (76 receptions, 821 yards, four TD), Keon Coleman (29, 556, four TD), Elijah Moore (61, 538, one TD with Cleveland) and Josh Palmer, who comes over from the L.A. Chargers after making 39 catches for 584 yards and one touchdown a year ago. The tight ends are Dalton Kincaid (44, 448, two TD and coming off a knee injury last season) and either Zach Davidson or rookie Jackson Hawes (Georgia Tech).

DEFENSE - Buffalo is led by defensive ends Greg Rousseau (eight sacks), A.J. Epenesa (six sacks) and Joey Bosa (free agent signing from L.A. Chargers) along with tackles DaQuan Jones and Ed Oliver. The linebackers are Matt Milano, Terrel Bernard (104 tackles) and Dorian Williams, who led the Bills with 114 tackles last season. The defensive backfield has safeties Cole Bishop and Taylor Rapp and corners Christian Benford (two interceptions), Ja'Marcus Ingram (two INT), Tre'Davious White and Taron Johnson (two picks). The Bills picked off 16 passes last year and had 39 sacks while leading the league with a plus-24 in turnovers.

OUTLOOK - The Bills ran away and hid with the AFC East division title again last year (their fifth division crown in a row) but yet again fell in the AFC playoffs, losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game. Head Coach Sean McDermott has been around for nine years now with the team and one of these days, they have to make it to the Super Bowl. They have a solid offense with Allen leading the way and the defense was very opportunistic a year ago, so it stands to reason they should have more success this season.

As long as Allen stays healthy and (newly renewed signed contract) running back James Cook continues to do his thing, the Bills will have a balanced offense and should be playing deep into the playoffs. They just have to figure out a way to get it done against the Chiefs when it matters most (in January) after showing they can handle their nemesis during the regular season. They should win another AFC East title, but it will be how they fare in the playoffs that matters most. It's Super Bowl or bust yet again for the Buffalo Bills this year.

2025 NFL PREVIEW - Washington Commanders

WASHINGTON COMMANDERS

2024 Record - 12-5-0

Head Coach - Dan Quinn

2024 Offensive Rank
- (7th overall) - 370 YPG; Passing - 216 YPG (17th), Rushing - 154 YPG (3rd); SCORING - 28.5 PPG (5th)

2024 Defensive Rank - (13th overall) - 327 YPG; Passing - 190 YPG (3rd), Rushing - 137 YPG (30th); SCORING - 23.0 PPG (18th)

Key Additions for 2025
- Deebo Samuel (WR), Will Harris (DB), Von Miller (DL), Eddie Goldman (DL), Javon Kinlaw (DL), Jonathan Jones (DB), Laremy Tunsil (OT)

Key Losses for 2025 - Jonathan Allen (DL), Jeremy Chinn (DB), Dante Fowler, Jr. (DL), Jamison Crowder (WR), Benjamin St-Juste (DB), Olamide Zaccheaus (WR)

OFFENSE - Quarterback Jayden Daniels enters his second season after a huge debut in 2024 when he passed for 3,568 yards with 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions and also led the Commanders in rushing with 891 yards (6.0 YPC) and had six rushing touchdowns. Brian Robinson, Jr. (799 rush yards, 4.3 YPC, eight TD) was traded (8/22/2025) to the San Francisco 49ers, leaving Austin Ekeler (367, 4.8 YPC, four TD), Chris Rodriguez, Jr. and rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt (Arizona) as the primary running backs. The wide receiving corps is led by Terry McLaurin (82 receptions, 1,096 yards, 13 TD), but he is in a contract dispute in training camp and has even requested a trade. The other wideouts for Washington include Deebo Samuel, who had 51 receptions for 670 yards and three scores (with the 49ers last year), Noah Brown (35, 453, one TD), Michael Gallup and K.J. Osborn. The tight end is Zach Ertz, who had 66 grabs for 654 yards and seven touchdowns last year.

DEFENSE - Washington has defensive linemen Clelin Ferrell, Jer'Zhan Newton, Dorrance Armstrong (five sacks), Von Miller (six sacks with Buffalo) and Darron Payne up front while 14-year veteran Bobby Wagner (team high 132 tackles) and Frankie Luvu (99 tackles, eight sacks) lead the linebackers. The secondary features corners Marshon Lattimore and Mike Sainristil (two interceptions) along with safeties Will Harris and Quan Martin. Noah Igbinoghene and Jonathan Jones provide depth to a secondary which helped the Commanders finish third in the league against the pass a year ago as the team had seven interceptions and 43 sacks.

OUTLOOK - Head Coach Dan Quinn always brings energy with him and it apparently rubbed off on the team a year ago as they came out of nowhere to make the playoffs with rookie QB Jayden Daniels taking the NFL by storm all the way to the NFC Championship game. As long as Daniels does his thing again, the Commanders should continue to be be a force on offense. What can this team do for an encore in the 2025 season? Beating out the Philadelphia Eagles for the NFC East crown is possible, but the defense must improve at stopping the run and forcing more turnovers.

The Commanders were fifth in the league in scoring, but gave up too many big plays on defense, especially in their blowout loss to the Eagles in the NFC title game. Eight new players arrive this season in D.C. to help the defense. The team needs to come to terms with (wide receiver) Terry McLaurin so the offense doesn't take a step back as he is their big play maker in the passing attack and Deebo Samuel should help out the offense with his talents after some good years in San Francisco. The Commanders will not be sneaking up on any teams this year, so taking advantage of a favorable first half schedule (on paper) would be a big benefit if this team wants to get back to the playoffs and perhaps take the next step in January.

2025 NFL PREVIEW - Pittsburgh Steelers

PITTSBURGH STEELERS

2024 Record - 10-7-0

Head Coach - Mike Tomlin

2024 Offensive Rank - (24th overall) - 319 YPG; Passing - 192 YPG (27th), Rushing - 127 YPG (11th); SCORING - 22.4 PPG (16th)

2024 Defensive Rank - (12th overall) - 327 YPG; Passing - 228 YPG (25th), Rushing - 99 YPG (6th); SCORING - 20.4 PPG (8th)

Key Additions for 2025 - Aaron Rodgers (QB), DK Metcalf (WR), Jalen Ramsey (DB), Darius Slay (DB), Jonnu Smith (TE), Kenneth Gainwell (RB), Daniel Ekuale (DL)

Key Losses for 2025 - Russell Wilson (QB), Justin Fields (QB), Minkah Fitzpatrick (DB), Donte Jackson (DB), Najee Harris (RB), Van Jefferson (WR), George Pickens (WR), Dan Moore (OL), Larry Ogunjobi (DL), Preston Smith (LB), Elandon Roberts (LB)

OFFENSE - Future Hall-of-Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers takes over for the Steelers this season. In 2024 with the New York Jets, he passed for 3,897 yards with 28 touchdowns and eleven interceptions. The running backs are Jaylen Warren, who had 511 rushing yards (4.3 YPC) and one touchdown last season and also had 38 receptions for 310 yards. Kenneth Gainwell comes to the team from Philadelphia to be the backup. DK Metcalf (66 receptions, 992 yards, five TD with Seattle) will be the top wide receiver while others include Calvin Austin III (36, 548, four TD), Scotty Miller and Roman Wilson. The tight ends are Pat Freiermuth (65, 653, seven TD) and Jonnu Smith, who had 88 receptions for 884 yards and eight touchdowns with Miami in 2024.

DEFENSE - Cameron Heyward (eight sacks), Derrick Harmon and Keeanu Benton man the defensive front line in Pittsburgh while All-Pro linebacker T.J. Watt (11 1/2 sacks) teams with Patrick Queen (team high 129 tackles), Alex Highsmith (six sacks) and Payton Wilson in the front seven. The secondary has Jalen Ramsey (three interceptions with Miami) at cornerback along with Joey Porter, Jr., Beanie Bishop, Jr. (four INT) and Darius Slay. The safeties are DeShon Elliott (108 tackles) and Juan Thornhill. Chuck Clark and Miles Killebrew add depth in the secondary.

OUTLOOK - It's been lather, rinse, repeat for the Steelers in recent years as they finish with a winning record and then quietly exit early in the AFC playoffs and Head Coach Mike Tomlin is looking for different results in 2025 as Aaron Rodgers comes to town to play quarterback. At 41 years old, it remains to be seen how much Rodgers has left in the tank, but he did put up solid numbers with the Jets last year after missing the 2023 season with an Achilles injury. The running game will feature Jaylen Warren after last year's leading rusher Najee Harris left for the L.A. Chargers in the off-season. Better pass protection this year would be a plus as well as Rodgers is nowhere near as mobile as he used to be.

The Steelers signature throughout their history has been strong defense and they were solid last year, finishing with a plus-16 in turnovers (2nd most in the NFL) with 17 interceptions and 40 sacks while allowing under 100 rushing yards per game. There will be a few new faces in the secondary with cornerback Jalen Ramsey coming over in the trade for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and two other new corners on board. The Steelers can challenge Baltimore and Cincinnati for the AFC North title if Rodgers and the offense can provide more scoring this season. They will be looking to get a playoff spot for the fifth time in six seasons, but even if they do make it, it's a roll of the dice how far they can go in January.

2025 NFL PREVIEW - Green Bay Packers

GREEN BAY PACKERS

2024 Record - 11-6-0

Head Coach - Matt LeFleur

2024 Offensive Rank - (5th overall) - 371 YPG; Passing - 224 YPG (12th), Rushing - 147 YPG (5th); SCORING - 27.1 PPG (8th)

2024 Defensive Rank - (5th overall) - 314 YPG; Passing - 215 YPG (13th), Rushing - 99 YPG (7th); SCORING - 19.9 (6th)

Key Additions for 2025 - Aaron Banks (OL), Nate Hobbs (DB), Mecole Hardman (WR), Isaiah Simmons (LB), Kristian Welch (LB)

Key Losses for 2025 - Josh Myers (OL), T.J. Slaton (DL), Eric Wilson (LB), Eric Stokes (DB), Corey Ballentine (DB)

OFFENSE - Quarterback Jordan Love passed for 3,389 yards along with 25 touchdowns and eleven interceptions last season. The wide receivers are Jayden Reed (55 receptions, 857 yards, six TD), Romeo Doubs (46, 601, four TD), rookie Matthew Golden (Georgia) and eventually Christian Watson, who had 29 receptions for 620 yards and two scores last season and provides the team with a legitimate deep passing threat, but he is still recovering from a knee injury suffered in the final game of the 2024 season and might not be ready when season starts. The tight ends are Tucker Kraft (50, 707, seven TD) and Luke Musgrave, who has missed much time due to various injuries in his first two years in the NFL. Running back Josh Jacobs leads the rushing attack, which was fifth overall last season. Jacobs ran for 1,329 yards (4.4 YPC) and scored 15 touchdowns. Emanuel Wilson is a perfect compliment in the backfield, having gone for 502 yards (4.9 YPC) and scoring four times last year.

DEFENSE - The Packers defense was solid against the run in 2024 and is led by Kenny Clark, Rashan Gary (7 1/2 QB sacks), Devonte Wyatt (five sacks), Kingsley Enagbare (4 1/2 sacks) and Lukas Van Ness up front. The linebackers are Edgerrin Cooper, Quay Walker (team leading 102 tackles) and Isaiah McDuffie, who had 94 tackles. The corners are Keisean Nixon (88 tackles) and Carrington Valentine, who had two interceptions last year. The safeties include Xavier McKinney, who had eight picks (2nd in the NFL), Evan Williams and Zayne Anderson. Green Bay had 45 sacks last year and also picked off 17 passes, which helped lead to a plus-12 in turnovers, which was third best in the league.

OUTLOOK - Once again in 2024, the Packers were a wild card playoff team and lost before making it to the NFC Championship Game. Head Coach Matt LaFleur would like to see the team go further should they make it back to the post-season. The offense scored 27 points per game a year ago, and went 5-6 in one-score games, in addition to a 2-3 finish that dropped them to third place in the NFC North. The Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings swept the Packers in division play and they split two games with the Chicago Bears. Winning division games goes a long way for better playoff seeding and if they want to be taken serious, the Packers must better control their fate in the division.

The Packers held opponents to just under 20 points per game and came up big with turnovers that helped them win some close games. However, they were just 2-5 in the regular season against playoff teams and then got bounced by Philadelphia in the wild card round. There are playmakers on both sides of the ball and Love, barring injury, has shown he is among the top quarterbacks in the NFC. Having a balanced offensive attack will be vital again in 2025 if the Packers expect to shine in January. The Packers can do better, but finishing games will be the key to a better season and possibly making a run to the Super Bowl.

2025 NFL PREVIEW - New York Jets

NEW YORK JETS

2024 Record - 5-12-0

Head Coach - Aaron Glenn

2024 Offensive Rank - (24th overall) - 310 YPG; Passing - 218 YPG (16th), Rushing - 92 YPG (31st); SCORING - 19.9 PPG (24th)

2024 Defensive Rank - (3rd overall) - 314 YPG; Passing - 193 YPG (4th), Rushing - 121 YPG (17th); SCORING - 23.8 PPG (20th)

Key Additions for 2025 - Andre Cisco (DB), Justin Fields (QB), Josh Myers (OL), Brandon Stephens (DB), Azareye'h Thomas (rookie - Florida State)

Key Losses for 2025 - Aaron Rodgers (QB), Tyler Conklin (TE), Davante Adams (WR), Chuck Clark (DB), Ashtyn Davis (DB), Javon Kinlaw (DL), Morgan Moses (OL), Brandin Echols (DB), Haason Reddick (LB), Tyron Smith (OL), D.J. Reed, Jr. (DB)

OFFENSE - The Jets will be going with Justin Fields at quarterback this season after Aaron Rodgers moved on to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the off-season. Fields was with the Steelers last season and in six starts he passed for 1,106 yards with five touchdowns and one interception and rushed for 289 yards (4.7 YPC) and scored five touchdowns. Veteran QB Tyrod Taylor is the backup. Breece Hall rushed for 876 yards (4.2 YPC) and scored five touchdowns and also had 57 receptions for 483 yards and three scores. Braelon Allen had 334 rushing yards (3.5 YPC) and scored two touchdowns. The wide receivers are led by Garrett Wilson, who hauled in 101 receptions for 1,104 yards and seven touchdowns. Also in the mix are Allen Lazard (37, 530, six TD), Josh Reynolds and rookie Arian Smith (Georgia). The tight ends are Mason Taylor (rookie - LSU) and Jeremy Ruckert.

DEFENSE - Defensive ends Will McDonald (10 1/2 sacks) and Michael Clemons (4 1/2 sacks) lead the front line for the Jets and nose tackle Derrick Nnadi and DE Jermaine Johnson II are also mainstays. Linebackers include leading tackler Jamien Sherwood (154 tackles) and Quincy Williams (116 tackles, including six sacks) and the secondary has corners Sauce Gardner, Brandon Stephens (70 tackles with Baltimore last year) and Michael Carter along with safeties Malachi Moore, Tony Adams and Andre Cisco, who was with Jacksonville last season. The Jets amassed 43 sacks last year and had seven interceptions.

OUTLOOK - Justin Fields is with his third NFL team as he enters his fifth season and new Head Coach Aaron Glenn is counting on him to be the guy to lead the offense as he is a dual threat at quarterback with outstanding speed. The running game ranked 31st in the league and could use a shot in the arm after Breece Hall's production fell off in 2024, even with his receiving skills out of the backfield. Fields will help the running game, but cannot overdo it. Wide receiver Garrett Wilson is coming off a big season and will be the primary target once again in the passing attack. More red zone efficiency is needed as too many drives stalled out last season.

The Jets were a top flight defense against the pass a year ago, but need to get more picks (the team was a minus-2 in turnovers) and force more fumbles as well. The run defense struggled at times and brought in free agent NT Derrick Nnadi (from Kansas City) to help in that area. (Coach) Glenn was the defensive coordinator with Detroit and like an aggressive style of play, which could lead to more turnovers for the Jets defense. The team lost seven one-score games in 2024, so closing out in crunch time is a priority to improve on just five victories from a year ago. The Jets are hoping to end a 15-year playoff drought, but things will need to click in a rapid fashion on both sides of the football if that is going to happen.

2025 NFL PREVIEW - New York Giants

NEW YORK GIANTS

2024 Record - 3-14-0

Head Coach - Brian Daboll

Offensive Rank in 2024 - (30th overall) - 295 YPG ; Passing - 190 YPG (28th), Rushing - 105 YPG (23rd); SCORING - 16.1 PPG (31st)

Defensive Rank in 2024 - (24th overall) - 347 YPG; Passing - 211 YPG (8th), Rushing - 136 YPG (27th); SCORING - 24.4 PPG (21st)

Key Additions for 2025 - Russell Wilson (QB), Abdul Carter (rookie - Florida State), Chauncey Golston (DL), Paulson Adebo (DB), Jevon Holland (DB), Jameis Winston (QB), Jaxson Dart (rookie - Mississippi)

Key Losses for 2025 - Adoree' Jackson (DB), Jason Pinnock (DB), Drew Lock (QB), Azeez Ojulari (LB), Christopher Hubbard (OL)

OFFENSE - The quarterback situation will look completely different this season as 14-year veteran Russell Wilson (2,482 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, five interceptions with Pittsburgh) takes over as the starter. Jameis Winston, another journeyman QB, was also brought in this season. With the Cleveland Browns last year, Winston had 2,121 passing yards with 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Rookie Jaxson Dart (Mississippi) is the third quarterback. The running game features Tyrone Tracy, Jr. as the main back after he rushed for 839 yards (4.4 YPC) and scored five touchdowns in his rookie season. Along with Tracy is Devin Singletary (437, 3.9 YPC, four TD) and rookie Cam Skattebo (Arizona State). The wide receivers are Malik Nabers (109 receptions, 1,204 yards, seven TD as a rookie), Darius Slayton (39, 573, two TD) and Wan'Dale Robinson, who caught 93 passes for 699 yards and three touchdowns. The tight end is Theo Johnson, who had 29 receptions for 331 yards and one score in twelve games.

DEFENSE - The Giants have nose tackle Dexter Lawrence (nine sacks) leading the way on the front line along with ends Roy Robertson-Harris, Rakeem Nunez-Roches and Chauncey Golston, who had 5 1/2 sacks with Dallas last year. The linebackers are Brian Burns (8 1/2 sacks), Kayvon Thibodeaux, Micah McFadden (team leading 107 tackles) and Bobby Okereke, who had 93 tackles last season. Rookie LB Abdul Carter (Florida State) should be a relevant player as well in 2025. The safeties are Tyler Nubin (97 tackles) and Jevon Holland along with corners Deonte Banks, Paulson Adebo (three interceptions), Dru Phillips and Cor'Dale Flott.

OUTLOOK - After having success in his first season as head coach, Brian Daboll has seen the team take big steps backward since 2022 and could be on the "hot seat" this season if more of the same results from 2024 happens. The Giants ranked near the bottom of the NFL in all the offensive categories and the defense didn't fare much better, especially against the run. The team made numerous changes on defense with the back seven area as eight players are gone from last year and new faces look to help make a difference. Despite ranking eighth overall against the pass in 2024, the Giants only had five interceptions last season, but did register 45 sacks, which was a bright spot.

It will be a tall order for the Giants to get out of the basement in the NFC East division, where the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles rule the nest. The Washington Commanders were a playoff team as well last year and the Dallas Cowboys are usually in the mix for a playoff spot. The key for the offense will be whether or not Russell Wilson can command the huddle and help youngsters Tyrone Tracy, Jr. and Malik Nabers continue to make bigger strides on offense. The team averaged a paltry 16 points per game a year ago and that must improve. Realistically, if the Giants can get to six or seven wins this season, it would double the total from last year and that would be a major step in the right direction as they build for a better future with (rookie QB) Jackson Dart eventually taking over on offense.

2025 NFL PREVIEW - Kansas City Chiefs

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

2024 Record - 15-2-0

Head Coach - Andy Reid

2024 Offensive Rank - (16th overall) - 328 YPG; Passing - 223 YPG (14th), Rushing - 105 YPG (22nd); SCORING - 22.6 PPG (15th)

2024 Defensive Rank - (9th overall) - 321 YPG; Passing - 219 YPG (18th), Rushing - 102 YPG (8th); SCORING - 19.2 PPG (4th)

Key Additions for 2025 - Jaylon Moore (OL), Gardner Minshew (QB), Kristian Fulton (DB), Jerry Tillery (DL), Elijah Mitchell (RB)

Key Losses for 2025 - Joe Thuney (OL), DeAndre Hopkins (WR), Samaje Perine (RB), Carson Wentz (QB), Derrick Nnadi (DL), Justin Reid (DB), Justin Watson (WR), Tershawn Wharton (DL)

OFFENSE - Patrick Mahomes returns for his eighth season as the Chiefs starting quarterback and in 2024 he had 3,928 passing yards with 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions and rushed for 307 yards (5.3 YPC) and two touchdowns. The running backs are Isiah Pacheco (310 yards, 3.7 YPC and one TD in seven games), Kareem Hunt (728, 3.6 YPC, seven TD) and rookie Brashard Smith (SMU). Travis Kelce is the tight end and led Kansas City with 97 receptions for 823 yards and three touchdowns. The wide receivers include Xavier Worthy (959, 638, six TD), Rashee Rice (who is still facing a league suspension for off the field activities) and Marquise Brown, who was limited with injuries a year ago. Rice had 24 receptions for 288 yards and two touchdowns before he was injured, playing in just four games. Tight end Noah Gray (40, 437, five TD) is also available in the passing game.

DEFENSE - Defensive End George Karlaftis (eight sacks) and tackle Chris Jones (five sacks) anchor the front line and linebackers include Nick Bolton (106 tackles), Leo Chenal and Drue Tranquill, who had 94 tackles. The secondary features safeties Bryan Cook and Jaden Hicks (three interceptions) and cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Kristian Fulton. Rookie Nohl Williams (California), Mike Edwards and Chamarri Conner add depth for this area. The defense had 39 sacks and 13 interceptions last season, helping lead to a plus-6 in the turnover category.

OUTLOOK - How about those Chiefs? After making it to their third consecutive Super Bowl last year, Head Coach Andy Reid and company are still the team to beat in the AFC. Led by QB Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs did what was necessary to win games and until their opponents can stop them, they will likely continue to win and be a dominant force. The numbers were down last year on the offense, but Mahomes and company never can be counted out.

The defense was solid again last season and barring injuries, should be a top unit again this season. Kansas City has a knack for coming up with the big play in key moments (on both sides of the ball) and if they have the ball late in the game, Mahomes usually delivers. The Super Bowl was a forgettable game for them as they were blown out by the Philadelphia Eagles. The schedule has five playoff opponents in the first eight games, so a quick start would be a benefit for the Chiefs this season. The AFC West division has been theirs to lose in recent years and it could be a real hassle for them this time around. Expect Kansas City to be playing into January again and until someone knocks them out, they are the favorites.

2025 NFL PREVIEW - Chicago Bears

CHICAGO BEARS

2024 Record - 5-12-0

Head Coach - Ben Johnson

2024 Offensive Rank
- (32nd overall) - 284 YPG; Passing - 182 YPG (31st), Rushing - 102 YPG  (25th); SCORING - 18.2 PPG (25th)

2024 Defensive Rank - (27th overall) - 354 YPG; Passing - 218 YPG (16th), Rushing - 136 YPG (28th); SCORING - 21.8 PPG (13th)

Key Additions for 2025 - Joe Thuney (OL), Drew Dalman (OL), Grady Jarrett (DL), Dayo Odeyingbo (DL), Colston Loveland (rookie - Michigan), Olamide Zaccheaus (WR)

Key Losses for 2025 - Keenan Allen (WR), Teven Jenkins (OL), Matt Pryor (OL), Coleman Shelton (OL), DeMarcus Walker (DL)

OFFENSE - Second year quarterback Caleb Williams passed for 3,541 yards with 20 touchdowns and just six interceptions last year and also rushed for 489 yards with a 6.0 YPG, but was sacked 68 times. Either Tyson Bagent or Case Keenum will be the backup QB this season. The running game has D'Andre Swift (959 yards, 3.8 YPG, six TD) and Roschon Johnson (150 yards, six TD) along with rookie Kyle Monangai (Rutgers) in camp. DJ Moore leads the wide receivers and last year he had 98 receptions for 966 yards and six touchdowns. Rome Odunze (54, 734, three TD) had a decent rookie season and will be targeted more this year with veteran Keenan Allen heading back to the L.A. Chargers. The tight ends are Cole Kmet (47, 474, four TD) and rookie Colston Loveland (Michigan).

DEFENSE - Defensive End Montez Sweat leads the front line and he had 5 1/2 quarterback sacks in 2024. Newcomers (via free agency) include Grady Jarrett and Dayo Odeyingbo while Gervon Dexter (five sacks) and Andrew Billings are also on hand. The linebackers are T.J. Edwards (129 tackles, including four sacks), Tremaine Edmunds (110 tackles), Noah Sewell and Amen Ogbongbemiga. Rookie Ruben Hyppolite II (Maryland) could see playing time as well. The secondary has corners Jaylon Johnson (two interceptions), Tyrique Stevenson (two INT) and Kyler Gordon. The safeties are Kevin Byard (team high 130 tackles), Jaquan Brisker and Jonathan Owens.

OUTLOOK - New Head Coach Ben Johnson is much lauded coming over to the Bears after serving as the offensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions and he will work with Caleb Williams to move the second year QB along to hopefully bigger and better results. The Bears averaged a meager 18.2 points per game last year and that has to improve. The offensive line was overhauled with three spots getting new players as Williams was sacked 68 times last year. The Bears offense was the worst in pro football in total yardage in 2024 and near the bottom as well in rushing, passing and scoring. With better pass protection and perhaps better run blocking, that should improve this year.

The defense took a major step back last year as the Bears ranked near the bottom of the NFL in total defense and struggled against the run. The pass defense was adequate, but too often gave up big plays in critical moments, which helped lead to seven one-score losses. The Bears only picked off eleven passes and had 40 sacks and were a plus-8 in turnovers, but were burned too often late in games. Clock management will be worked on as well this season. The Thanksgiving Day game debacle in Detroit led to the firing of former head coach Matt Eberflus and Johnson is intent on efficiency on both sides of the ball for success.

The Bears are up against it in the NFC North, which had the other three teams all make the playoffs last year. The Bears had seven one-score losses last season, so a good start and consistent play, especially on offense, could lead to a much better season. The playoffs are a long shot, but how well the team develops under the new game plan will decide how far the Bears can go.

2025 NFL PREVIEW - Indianapolis Colts

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

2024 Record - 8-9-0

Head Coach - Shane Steichen

2024 Offensive Rank - (13th overall) - 335 YPG; Passing - 198 YPG (25th), Rushing - 137 YPG (8th); SCORING - 22.2 PPG (17th)

2024 Defensive Rank - (29th overall) - 361 YPG; Passing - 229 YPG (29th), Rushing - 132 YPG (24th); SCORING - 25.1 PPG (24th)

Key Additions for 2025 - Charvarius Ward (DB), Cam Bynum (DB), Daniel Jones (QB), Khalil Herbert (RB), Tyler Warren (rookie - Penn State)

Key Losses for 2025 - Ryan Kelly (OL), Julian Blackmon (DB), Joe Flacco (QB), E.J. Speed (LB), Taven Bryan (DL), Dayo Odeyingbo (DL)

OFFENSE - The quarterback spot is in a battle between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones as training camp goes on. Richardson (1,814 passing yards with eight TD and 12 INT along with 499 rushing yards and six TD last year) is entering his third season and has been nursing a hand injury after missing numerous games last year. Jones was released by the New York Giants last season and is trying to win the starting job. The running backs are Jonathan Taylor (1,431 yards, 4.7 YPC and 11 TD), Khalil Herbert and rookie D.J. Giddens (Kansas State). Michael Pittman, Jr. (69 receptions, 808 yards, three TD), Alec Pierce (37, 824, seven TD), Josh Downs (72, 803, five TD) and tight ends Mo Alie-Cox and Tyler Warren (rookie - Penn State) are the primary receivers in the passing game.

DEFENSE - DeForest Buckner (6 1/2 QB sacks), Grover Stewart, Kwity Paye (eight sacks), Laiatu Latu (four sacks) and Samson Ebukam lead the defensive line and the linebackers are Jaylon Carlies and Zaire Franklin, who led the Colts with 173 tackles last year. In the secondary are safeties Nick Cross (three interceptions) and Cam Bynum (96 tackles and three INT with Minnesota) along with corners Charvarius Ward, Kenny Moore II (three picks) and Juju Brents. Indianapolis registered 36 sacks and had 16 interceptions last season.

OUTLOOK - The Colts have been a hard team to gauge the past few years and this year could be the same with many new faces on defense as well as the quarterback competition as the 2025 season looms. Head Coach Shane Steichen came on board two years ago as an offensive guru and so far the results have been hit and miss with Richardson as the starting quarterback. This is a big season for both of them and if the team has more struggles, they both could be gone.

The Colts play in the AFC South division and Houston has been the big dog the last two seasons, so if the they want to get back in the fold and make the playoffs for the first time since 2020, a good start and better results in divisional play is needed. Mediocrity in division play and another 4-6 start in 2025 won't get it done. The defense was bad last year, finishing in the bottom third of the NFL in nearly all categories. Along with playing better defense, having a healthy quarterback on the field and keeping running back Jonathan Taylor fresh all season long will help this team be better and perhaps challenge Houston for the division crown. It is doable, but not likely to happen.
