OFFENSE - Quarterback Bo Nix played well in his rookie season, passing for 3,775 yards with 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions and also had 430 rushing yards (4.7 YPC) and scored four touchdowns. His wide receiving corps includes Courtland Sutton, who led the Broncos with 81 catches for 1,081 yards and eight touchdowns last year along with Marvin Mims, Jr. (39, 503, six TD) and Devaughn Vele, who had 41 receptions for 475 yards and three touchdowns. The tight ends are Evan Engram (47, 365, one TD in nine games with Jacksonville) and Adam Trautman. Jaleel McLaughlin rushed for 496 yards (4.4 YPC) and scored one touchdown last season and along with rookie RJ Harvey (Central Florida) will be the featured running backs this season. Former Ravens and Chargers RB J.K. Dobbins was signed as well and he had 905 rushing yards (4.6 YPC) and scored nine touchdowns last year.
DEFENSE - Defensive End Zach Allen had 8 1/2 quarterback sacks last year and leads the front line along with John Franklin-Myers and nose tackle D.J. Jones. Linebackers Nik Bonitto (13 1/2 sacks), Jonathan Cooper (10 1/2 sacks), Alex Singleton and Dre Greenlaw provide pressure for the pass rush as the Broncos led the NFL with quarterback 63 sacks last year. The secondary has Defensive Player of the Year Patrick Surtain II (four interceptions) at one cornerback spot along with Riley Moss (one INT) and safeties Brandon Jones (three picks) and Talanoa Hufanga. Rookies Jahdae Barron (Texas) and Joshua Pickett (Duke) will add depth to the secondary. The Denver defense intercepted 15 passes last season.
OUTLOOK - The Broncos were a pleasant surprise a year ago, making the playoffs as rookie QB Bo Nix had an excellent season. Head Coach Sean Payton will look to see more of the same from Nix and the offense in 2025. The Broncos will have a rookie running back (RJ Harvey) and Jaleel McLaughlin leading the rushing attack after Javonte Williams left to Dallas in the off-season. As long as the rushing game stays steady like last year, the offense should be balanced again and score enough points to keep the Broncos in many games.
The defense is the strong suit of the team, finishing seventh overall and playing strong against the run while registering a league high 63 sacks. The Broncos did get torched with big plays on occasion due to their aggressive style of play, but they also force turnovers (plus-6 in 2024) and that is always a good thing. As long as Nix plays well and avoids injury, he will lead the Denver offense that showed steady improvement last season and should get better this year. Combined with a strong defense, the Broncos should be in the hunt for another AFC playoff spot and could challenge the Kansas City Chiefs for the AFC West crown. This is a team that is on the rise.
