Newcomers for 2019 - Randall Cobb (WR), Robert Quinn (DL), George Iloka (DB), Kerry Hyder (DL), Christian Covington (DL)


Keys on Offense - The Cowboys look to have their "Big Three" ready to go again this season with quarterback Dak Prescott (3,885 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions along with 305 rushing yards and six rushing TD), running back Ezekiel Elliott (1,434 rushing yards, 4.7 ypc average and six TD) and Amari Cooper (75 receptions, 1,005 yards, seven TD) coming off solid seasons.
They will also have WR Randall Cobb (38, 383, two TD with Green Bay) and tight end Jason Witten, who is coming out of retirement to play this season. However, Elliott is holding out as training camp started and if he decides to sit out (possibly all season) for a new contract, the Cowboys will look to Tony Pollard (rookie draft pick from Memphis) to be the primary running back.


Keys on Defense - Demarcus Lawrence (10 1/2 QB sacks), Tyrone Crawford (5 1/2 sacks) and Randy Gregory (six sacks) give the defense three solid pass rushers up front along with solid linebacking from Leighton Vander Esch (two interceptions), Jaylon Smith and Sean Lee. Also is the mix is DE Robert Quinn, who had 6 1/2 sacks with Miami last season.
The secondary consists of corner men Byron Jones and Chibode Awuzie and safeties Xavier Woods and George Iloka, who comes over from Minnesota via free agency. The Cowboys had the number seven defense in the NFL a year ago, allowing 329 yards per game (95 rushing, 234 passing) while getting 39 QB sacks and nine interceptions.


OUTLOOK - The Cowboys made the playoffs last season and advanced to the Divisional round, which might have gotten Head Coach Jason Garrett off the "hot seat" heading into this season.
If the Cowboys can get off to a good start, that would take pressure off the team, but not having Ezekiel Elliott (possibly for the entire season) as he holds out for a new contract doesn't help things.
He is a vital cog to the offense and takes pressure off QB Dak Prescott and the passing game. The offense was erratic at times in 2018, ranking 22nd overall with 21.2 points per game scoring average.
The defense was really good last year and could be just as good again provided they stay healthy in the 2019 season. They have a good mix of veteran talent and youth that led to the success last season, ranking sixth in scoring defense, allowing 20.2 points per game.
As long as they can get Elliott back in the fold by Week One (or within the first month of the season) the Cowboys should be considered as possible favorites to win the NFC East title once again. However, they must figure out a way to get Zeke back on the field because the Philadelphia Eagles loom large as they look to knock the 'Pokes from the top spot in the division. With "The Big Three" in tow, this team should go 11-5 and get back to the playoffs, where the Super Bowl isn't out of the question this season.
However, all bets are off if Elliott does what Le'Veon Bell did in Pittsburgh last season.

Newcomers for 2019 - Cameron Wake (LB), Adam Humphries (WR), Ryan Tannehill (QB), Hroniss Grasu (OL), Rodger Saffold (OL)


Keys on Offense - Quarterback Marcus Mariota is entering his fifth season and is coming off an injury plagued 2018 where he passed for only 2,528 yards with eleven touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also rushed for 357 yards (5.7 ypc average) and two touchdowns. Ryan Tannehill comes over from the Miami Dolphins to be the reserve quarterback. Last season, Tannehill had 1,979 passing yards with 17 TD passes and nine interceptions.
The running tandem of Derrick Henry (1,059 rush yards, 4.9 ypc, 12 TD) and Dion Lewis (517 rush yards and 59 receptions, two TD) is solid and Tennessee had the number six rushing attack in the NFL last season, averaging 126.7 yards per game.
The wide receivers are Corey Davis (65 receptions, 891 yards, four TD), Adam Humphries (76, 816, five TD with Tampa Bay), Taywan Taylor (37, 466, one TD) and rookie draft pick A.J. Brown (Mississippi). Tight End Delanie Walker is looking to rebound after missing nearly the entire 2018 season with an ankle injury.


Keys on Defense - Jurell Casey (seven QB sacks), Jayon Brown (six sacks) and newcomer Cameron Wake (six sacks with Miami) will be the ones looking to put the pressure on opposing quarterbacks. The Titans registered 39 QB sacks in 2018 and had the eighth ranked defense, allowing 333.3 yards per game. Tennessee was third in scoring defense, giving up just 18.9 points per game.
In the secondary, corners Malcolm Butler (three interceptions) and Adoree' Jackson (two INT) along with safety Kevin Byard (four picks) spearhead a ball hawking unit that was sixth against the pass last year, giving up 217 yards per game with eleven interceptions.


OUTLOOK - A third consecutive 9-7 season wasn't enough to get back to the NFL Playoffs after the Titans advanced to the Divisional round two years ago. Head Coach Mike Vrabel is entering his second season in Tennessee and he knows the team can do better in a competitive AFC South division.
There is optimism this team can compete with Houston and Indianapolis for the division title, but the offense must be much better than 2018, when it ranked near the bottom of the league in scoring (27th with 19.4 points per game) and total yardage (25th with 313 ypg). The passing attack (186 ypg) was anemic with Mariota sidelined and a key target (TE Delanie Walker) playing in just one game last year.
If Mariota can get on track with the passing game and the running game remains consistent, this team should put more points on the board, taking pressure off their defense.
The defense is solid and took on 11-year veteran LB Cameron Wake to bolster the pass rush. This team can stop both the run and pass, but more turnovers and sacks would be a huge plus. The Titans were a minus-1 last season in the turnover category.
The best scenario for the Titans is getting off to a good start and finishing strong like they did last season. The likely finish in 2019 is 8-8 for the Titans unless they can show the ability to play consistenly on both sides of the football all season long.

Newcomers for 2019 - Nick Foles (QB), Chris Conley (WR), Geoff Swaim (TE), Benny Cunningham (RB), Alfred Blue (RB), Jake Ryan (LB), Cedric Ogbuehi (OL)


Keys on Offense - Nick Foles takes over as the quarterback this season after passing for 1,413 yards with seven touchdown passes and four interceptions with the Philadelphia Eagles last season.
Running back Leonard Fournette missed six games with a hamstring injury last year and rushed for just 439 yards (3.3 ypc average) and five touchdowns after a huge rookie season in 2017. Alfred Blue (499 yards with Houston last year) comes over to help the running attack, which dropped to 19th overall last year, averaging 107.7 yards per game.
The wide receivers are Dede Westbrook (66 receptions for 717 yards and five TD), Keelan Cole (38, 491, one TD), Chris Conley (32, 334, five TD with Kansas City) and Marqise Lee, who missed the entire 2018 season with a torn ACL injury. The tight ends include rookie Josh Oliver (San Jose State) and Geoff Swaim, who had 26 receptions, one for a score, with Dallas last season.


Keys on Defense - Up in the front seven for the Jaguars is Calais Campbell (10 1/2 QB sacks), Yannick Ngakoue (9 1/2 sacks) and Marcell Dareus along with linebackers Myles Jack and Quincy Williams. Top rookie pick Josh Allen is an edge rusher (DE/LB) from Kentucky who will look to make an impact for the team.
Cornerback Jalen Ramsey (three interceptions) is the top defensive back for Jacksonville along with A.J. Bouye and safeties Jarrod Wilson and Ronnie Harrison, which formed a solid pass defense in 2018, ranking second in the NFL.
The Jaguars were fifth overall on defense a year ago, allowing 312 yards per game (117 rushing, 195 passing) and had 37 quarterback sacks and eleven interceptions. They also ranked fourth in the NFL in scoring defense, allowing 19.8 points per game.


OUTLOOK - After just missing an appearance in the Super Bowl in the 2017 season, the Jaguars were a disappointment last year, dropping to the basement in the AFC South division. Head Coach Doug Marrone will not tolerate such a finish again this season, so enter Nick Foles at quarterback.
Foles helped lead the Philadelphia Eagles to the Super Bowl title two years ago after taking over for an injured Carson Wentz. He has a knack for playing well in crunch time and the Jags would like to see him lead the offense to a much better performance this season, as they finished 31st in scoring in 2018 with 15.3 points per game.
Getting RB Leornard Fournette to play up to his rookie season level would be a huge plus as well. Fournette was injured last year, but his poor performance prior to the injury was a cause for concern. In addition, the passing attack (with Blake Bortles at QB) was abysmal, averaging just 194 yards per game. Better pass protection from the offensive line is a must as well. Jacksonville allowed 53 QB sacks last season.
The Jaguars showed they can play with any team in the NFL, as they manhandled the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots early in the 2018 season before the bottom fell out. If things can mesh with the new personnel on offense and the defense remains consistent, there is reason for optimism. A 7-9 finish is most likely this season, but the Jaguars can get back to the post-season again only if the desire is there and the offense steps it up with the ground and pound attack of the 2017 season.

Newcomers for 2019 - Devin Funchess (WR), Justin Houston (DL)


Keys on Offense - Quarterback Andrew Luck has been coming along during training camp following an injured calf, but expect the eighth year QB to be ready by Week One. Luck had 39 touchdown passes a year ago along with 15 interceptions and 4,593 passing yards after missing the 2017 season. Jacoby Brissett will be the man if Luck isn't ready. 
The wide receivers are T.Y. Hilton (76 receptions, 1,270 yards and six TD), Devin Funchess (44, 549, four TD with Carolina) and Chester Rogers (53, 485, two TD). The tight end duo of Eric Ebron (66, 750, 13 TD) and Jack Doyle (26, 245, two TD) is among the best in the NFL.
Marlon Mack leads the running backs after putting up a 4.7 ypc average by rushing for 908 yards (nine TD) and also had 17 receptions, including one touchdown catch. Nyheim Hines rushed for 314 yards and two scores but had 63 receptions for 425 yards and two more touchdowns.


Keys on Defense - The front seven is stacked with Denico Autry (nine QB sacks) leading the way along with linebacker Darius Leonard (seven sacks and two interceptions), who was named the AFC Defensive Rookie of the Year last season. In addition, Defensive End Justin Houston (nine sacks with Kansas City) joins the team this year.
Front linemen Jabaal Sheard (5 1/2 sacks), Margus Hunt (five sacks) and Tyquan Lewis round out the tough defense, which ranked eighth against the run, giving up just 101.9 yards per game.
The secondary has Kenny Moore (three interceptions) and Malik Hooker (two INT) along with Clayton Geathers, Quincy Wilson, Pierre Desir and rookie draft pick Rock Ya-Sin (Temple). The Colts pass defense gave up 238 yards per game and had 15 interceptions last season along with 38 QB sacks.


OUTLOOK - The Colts, under first year Head Coach Frank Reich, made the playoffs last season and advanced to the Divisional round after missing the post-season for three seasons.
There is plenty of talent of both sides of the ball and Luck is the key to the offense after putting up great numbers in his comeback season. Along with Hilton and tight end Eric Ebron and RB Marlon Mack, Luck has plenty of weapons to get the ball to. Luck was well protected in 2018 by a solid offensive line, being sacked just 18 times.
The Indianapolis offense gained 386 yards per game last year (7th in NFL) and scored 27.1 points per game, which was fifth overall.
On defense, the Colts had the top rookie player in the AFC with Leonard and has a good mix of veteran talent to go with the younger players that helped the defense rank 11th overall, allowing 340 yards per game and 21.5 points per game. In addition, kicker Adam Vinatieri is looking toward his 24th NFL season and had another solid performance last year.
The Colts can challenge Houston for the AFC South crown this year and as long Luck and other key players remain healthy, this team should finish 11-5 and get back to the playoffs. Whether they can get past AFC stalwarts New England, Kansas City and even possibly the Los Angeles Chargers remains to be seen, but look for the Colts to be a very tough team to beat this season.

Major League Baseball - Week In Review

The St. Louis Cardinals have been rolling since the All-Star break and have taken over first place in the National League Central division by a slim margin (half game) after taking two of three games against the visiting Chicago Cubs this week. The Milwaukee Brewers are right there in third place, just 2 1/2 games off the pace. The Cubs beat the Brewers, 6-2 at Wrigley Field on Friday afternoon.
In a strange and wild 15 inning game on Friday night, the Chicago White Sox beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-3. Leury Garcia beat the tag at home plate in the top if the 15th to make the difference in the final score. Phillies pitcher Vince Velasquez was playing left field and made two great throws (one a put out at the plate and the other razor thin close as Garcia scored) and also had a diving catch to end the inning and prevent more runs from scoring.
The New York Mets, who acquired pitcher Marcus Stroman from Toronto last weekend, had their seven game win streak snapped last night in Pittsburgh as the Pirates won 8-4. The Mets had swept three games from the White Sox in Chicago earlier in the week. The Mets are within five games of a wild card berth following their recent hot streak.
The Houston Astros served notice they will be the team to beat in the American League after dealing with Arizona to get starting pitcher Zack Greinke. The Astros slugged six home runs in a 10-2 rout against visiting Seattle Friday night. They lead the Oakland A's by 8 1/2 games in the A.L. West division race.
The New York Yankees, after dropping three of four games in Boston last weekend, got a measure of revenge on Friday night at Yankee Stadium by topping the Bosox, 4-2. The Bronx Bombers have a 7 1/2 game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the A.L. East. The Rays swept the Red Sox on the road this week and have won four straight to get back into the fold in the wild card chase.
In the A.L. Central, the Minnesota Twins beat Kansas City, 11-9 on Friday while the Cleveland Indians topped the visiting L.A. Angels, 7-3. The Tribe acquired Yasiel Puig from Cincinnati and Franmil Reyes from San Diego at the trade deadline as they continue to chase down the Twins.
The division races still in doubt are the A.L. Central and N.L. Central races as the both the East and West divisions in both leagues aren't close with just 50 games to go for most teams.

Newcomers for 2019 - A.J. McCarron (QB), Briean Body-Calhoun (DB), Tashaun Gipson (DB), Bradley Roby (DB), Darren Fells (TE), Matt Kalil (OL)


Keys on Offense - Deshaun Watson is the quarterback and he passed for 4,165 yards a year ago with 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions while also rushing for five touchdowns and gaining 552 yards for a 5.6 ypc average. He was also sacked 62 times.
Three very able wide receivers for the Texans include All Pro DeAndre Hopkins (115 receptions for 1,572 yards with eleven touchdowns), Will Fuller (32, 503, four TD) and Keke Coutee, who had 28 receptions for 287 yards and a touchdown. Tight End Jordan Thomas made 20 grabs for 215 yards with four touchdowns.
Lamar Miller is the main running back and he gained 973 yards (4.6 ypc) and scored five touchdowns. He also had 25 receptions, including one for a score.


Keys on Defense - There is talent abound up front for this unit as Defensive End J.J. Watt (16 QB sacks) and linebackers Jadeveon Clowney (nine sacks) and Whitney Mercilus (four sacks) lead the way.
In the secondary, cornerback Johnathan Joseph (two interceptions) and safety Justin Reid (three picks, one for a TD) are back in the fold along with Bradley Roby and newcomers Tashaun Gipson (safety with Jacksonville in 2018) and rookie pick Lonnie Johnson (Kentucky). The Texans ranked 12th overall in defense (343 ypg allowed) while posting third against the run (82.7 ypg allowed) but 28th against the pass as they allowed 260.4 yards per game. They also registered 43 sacks and intercepted 15 passes.


OUTLOOK - After finishing 11-5 a year ago, but then exiting in the wild card round against Indianapolis in the playoffs, the Texans were left scratching their heads. It was the third playoff appearance in four years for Head Coach Bill O' Brien and his team, but they feel they can go further.
A lot will hinge on whether the Texans can get it rolling once January arrives, however that is no guarantee this season. Houston faces a very tough schedule and the Indianapolis Colts are their main  nemesis in the AFC South. The offense was decent last season, averaging 25 points per game and the defense gave up just 19.8 points per game (4th in NFL) to give them the division crown.
The offensive line for the Texans, which drafted two rookies with their first three picks, needs to improve for sure as QB Desahun Watson was sacked 62 times last year. If this team wants to get back to the playoffs, that number must drop significantly. The running game is in good hands with Miller, but a decent compliment other than Watson running the ball would be a huge plus.
The defense is solid in the front seven, but the secondary was torched too often in 2018 and they also lost Kareem Jackson and Tyrann Mathieu to free agency. It's tough to run on Houston, but opponents showed they can pass all day against them.
Another division title is possible, but a lot has to click and keeping wideouts Fuller and Coutee healthy is a must. The Texans will likely finish 9-7 this season, which means they could be on the outside looking in come playoff time.

Keys on Offense - Jameis Winston will be the quarterback after an injury plagued 2018 season in which he passed 2,992 yards with 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Blaine Gabbert is the back up this season. Peyton Barber (871 yards, 3.7 ypc average and five TD) is the primary running back.
Mike Evans (86 receptions, 1,524 yards and eight TD) is a premier wide receiver in the NFL and is flanked by Chris Godwin (58, 842, seven TD). Breshad Perriman comes over from Cleveland in free agency and had 16 receptions for 340 yards and two touchdowns. The tight ends include O.J. Howard (34, 565, five TD) and Cameron Brate, who had 30 receptions for 289 yards and six touchdowns.


Keys on Defense - Two main players for the Buccaneers defense are not available as training camp opened as Jason Pierre-Paul (12 1/2 QB sacks) suffered a severe neck injury in the off-season and Gerald McCoy moved on to the Carolina Panthers. Pierre-Paul is on the non active list and it's possible he could play later into this season.
Those likely to make an impact this season will be Carl Nassib (6 1/2 sacks), Vita Vea (three sacks) and Beau Allen up front along with linebackers Shaquil Barrett (three sacks with Denver last year), Lavonte David (3 1/2 sacks) and top rookie pick Devin White (LSU). The secondary features Carlton Davis and Vernon Heargraves III at cornerback along with safeties Justin Evans and Kentrell Brice. Rookies Sean Bunting (Central Michigan), Jamel Dean (Auburn) and Mike Edwards (Kentucky) will vie for playing time as well.


OUTLOOK - The Buccaneers last winning season was three years ago and they haven't made the playoffs since the 2007 season, so new Head Coach Bruce Arians has his work cut out for him this season. Arians had success in Arizona following an interim top coaching job with Indianapolis seven years ago.
He will look to get QB Jameis Winston in top form following a lost season due to injuries as the Buccaneers offense turned the ball over way too much, evidenced by their next to league worst minus-18 in the turnover category.
There is potential with the passing game, which was tops in the NFL a year ago, averaging 320 yards per game. However, the running game has to step it up after averaging just 95 yards a game (29th rank) last season.
On defense, there will be many questions to be answered as the Bucs look to fill the voids of Pierre-Paul and McCoy up front along with as many as six rookies vying for starting roles. The team only had 38 QB sacks a year ago while getting only nine interceptions. Better pressure on opposing quarterbacks is vital to success or failure this season.
In addition, Tampa Bay allowed 29 points per game, which was 31st in the NFL. Another 5-11 season appears to be the likelihood for this team as they look toward the future with a new coaching staff taking over.
