Stanley Cup Finals And Other Sports Musings

The Stanley Cup Finals between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Montreal Canadiens begin on Monday evening in what could be one of two scenarios.

The Canadiens have been the upstarts this year in the NHL Playoffs, upsetting the Toronto Maple Leafs, Winnipeg Jets and the (Las) Vegas Golden Knights. Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Lightning, the defending Stanley Cup champions, were pretty much expected to reach this round and they are coming off a grueling seven-game series win against the New York Islanders and are big favorites to retain the Stanley Cup trophy.

The team from Montreal is a tradition rich franchise and has 24 Stanley Cup titles, the last one coming way back in 1993 when they defeated the Los Angeles Kings in five games. In fact, they are the last team from Canada to win the Stanley Cup. This series could be over in a hurry with Tampa Bay once again winning or it could possibly go six or the full seven games with perhaps the Canadiens adding that elusive 25th Stanley Cup trophy to their collection.

The call here is Tampa Bay winning in five or six games, but anything is possible in the finals.

Meanwhile, the NBA playoffs are winding down and so far, it is the Phoenix Suns up 3-1 in the Western Conference Finals against the Los Angeles Clippers. The Suns haven't been in the NBA Finals since 1993, when they were beaten in six games by the mighty Chicago Bulls, who dominated the 1990's with six NBA titles.

The Suns should get back there this time around, barring a major collapse. In the Eastern Conference, the Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks are tied at one game apiece in their best-of-seven round to advance to the finals. The Bucks are favored to reach their first NBA Finals since 1974 while the Hawks haven't won since the 1958 season, when they were still located in St. Louis.

The pick here is Phoenix and Milwaukee in the finals with the Suns getting their first ever NBA championship.

On to Major League Baseball where so far it has been a unique season with all the ho-hitters being tossed by pitchers. Seven (or eight if you count Madison Bumgarner's seven inning effort in late April) so far with the latest a combined four pitcher effort by the Chicago Cubs against the Los Angeles Dodgers just this past week.

It should be interesting to see how the scrutiny on pitchers for doctoring the baseball plays out as the season winds on and on this summer. Back a few years ago, MLB wanted to speed things up by putting a pitch clock in the game and also prohibiting batters from stepping out of the batter's box after every single pitch to adjust batting gloves, etc. That didn't last too long and is almost never enforced by the umpires any longer.

The league standings in baseball have some surprises this season as the Fourth of July and All-Star break approach in the next couple of weeks.

The biggest surprise has to be the San Francisco Giants in first place with a comfortable lead in the National League West division over both the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres. The Dodgers and Padres are deemed the two heavyweights in that division. But there is still a lot of baseball to be played this season.

Over in the American League, the Boston Red Sox continue to confound the "experts" as they remain at or near the top of the American League East division. The Tampa Bay Rays have a one-half game lead over the Bosox right now with the favored New York Yankees floundering around in third place to this point. Anything is possible it seems it the game these days, so stay tuned.

Both Chicago teams are contenders so far this year. The White Sox have been in first place in the AL Central for quite some time with only Cleveland mounting a challenge. The Minnesota Twins were thought to be the favorites to grab a third consecutive AL Central title this year, but they are tied for last place with the Detroit Tigers at this point of the season.

Meanwhile, the Cubs are in second place in the NL Central, two games behind the Milwaukee Brewers while the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals are attempting to get closer in the race. The New York Mets lead the NL East by five games with a log jam of the other four teams in that division trying to get closer.

The AL West has the Houston Astros three games ahead of the Oakland A's right now and they both are way ahead of Seattle, Los Angeles (Angels) and Texas in that division race. But again, there is still a lot of baseball to be played this summer.

And don't forget, football will be getting going in a about a month from now with NFL training camps and the college football teams preparing for the 2021 season. Here is hoping the players and coaching staffs and teams make a wise decision regarding COVID-19 vaccinations and we don't see anything go wrong like what just happened with the North Carolina State baseball team being kicked out of the College World Series due to an outbreak of covid infections on the team.

That stemmed from two players who were not vaccinated. It's their choice, but people need to choose wisely in this age of the pandemic, which appears to be coming closer and closer to an end.

Hopefully, that continues and we can all enjoy the good old summertime the way it is meant to be.

30 Years Ago Today? Un-BULL-lieve-a-BULL

Michael Jordan with the championship trophy.
The Chicago Bulls won their first ever NBA championship 30 years ago today with a 108-101 victory in Los Angeles against the Lakers, winning the series four games to one with Michael Jordan winning the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award.

30 years ago? Really?

My oh my, where has the time gone?

I remember, like many Chicagoans, the Bulls celebrating on the floor of the Great Western Forum on the night of June 12, 1991 as the clock ran out and of course, Jordan clutching the championship trophy and weeping tears of joy with his parents at his side in the Bulls' locker room following the game. There were many big efforts from the team that night, especially guard John Paxson nailing clutch shots down the stretch to help salt the game away. Forward Scottie Pippen led the Bulls in scoring in the decisive game with 32 points.

For me personally, it was so gratifying to see as I was the Bulls sound engineer for a seven year period (from 1987-1994) at the home games and a great sense of pride was felt when they won that game to clinch the title.

Awesome times indeed.

Just so hard to believe that was 30 years ago. The memories always live on and many, many people in Chicago will always cherish those sports memories. The Bulls would go on to win SIX NBA championships in the decade of the '90s, which included two "three-peats" happening from 1991-1993 and again from the 1996-98 seasons.

Thank You once again Chicago Bulls.

Random Topics

Here we are approaching the Memorial Day holiday once again and it is time to reflect on some random topics.

Haven't done this for quite some time, but then again as far as politics goes, there hasn't been a whole lot of drama from the White House. At least not since Joe Biden became president. And thank God for that.

It seems the Republican party continues to dwell on the past and refuses to acknowledge the wrong doing of former president Trump and his misdeeds for four years, especially the insurrection and coup attempt in our nation's capitol on January 6th of this year. Trump still banters about that he was robbed and is still the POTUS as the election was a fraud, etc.

Yawn.

This guy seems to think his shit doesn't stink and he can do and say whatever he pleases. Trump is still delusional and likely will be until his dying day. The 75 year-old man/child just does not get it and neither do his loyal followers, both political leaders and private citizens.

Mitch McConnell, the minority leader from the republican party in the U.S. Senate, wants everyone to just forget about what happened on January 6th when the Trump fanatics and psychopaths stormed the U.S. Capitol which resulted in the deaths of at least five people, including a capitol police officer.

Sorry Mitch, but you are in the minority and your word does not carry the clout it did a few months back when your party had the majority. The news media may fawn over your word and Trump's incoherent babblings still, but the rest of the people in the U.S.A. have moved on. We don't care about your recklessness and especially not Trump's either. You two are like a couple of broken records.

Enough already.

As for Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert, the newest psycho sisters from the republican party (replacing Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin), they continue to drone on about how bad things are for people in this country.

Yawn.

Talk about clueless. Greene and Boebert make Alicia Silverstone and company's characters from the 1995 movie look downright intelligent regarding that matter.

And then there is Matt Gatez, who is accused of having sex with minors and sex trafficking young girls as well. How in the hell is this guy still allowed to be a U.S. House representative? Then again, he is from Florida, the state that has Ron DeSantis, another psychotic republican, as their governor.

Seems Forrest Gump was spot on regarding certain people who vote for these politicians . . .  Stupid is as stupid does.

Turning to sports, the NBA Playoffs are in full swing and once again LeBron James is leading the Los Angeles Lakers to what appears to be another NBA title. It is early in the post-season, but the Lakers seems to have found their groove following injuries to James and fellow star player Anthony Davis. They will be tough to beat.

The NHL Playoffs are also rolling along and the Colorado Avalanche and Boston Bruins are looking solid so far. The Toronto Maple Leafs, Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning, which is the defending Stanley Cup champions, are all in the mix as well. Hockey season is too long, but best of luck to these teams still competing.

Lastly, here is hoping everybody has a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend holiday. It is deserved after all the people in this country have been through since last year's debacle with Trump and the COVID-19 pandemic, which appears to finally be waning.

Thank you President Biden for a realistic view of things regarding this topic and getting things done so responsible people can get the vaccine and live a (somewhat) more normal life once again.

God Bless America.

Farewell To A Legendary Chicago News Reporter

Dick Kay, the former news reporter in Chicago television news for over 30 years and current host of "Back on the Beat" political talk show on WCPT-AM 820 radio in Chicago passed away early Thursday morning from reported heart failure after he was hospitalized following a brain hemorrhage last weekend.

Kay was 84 years old and was renowned for his gregarious nature and booming voice during political interviews and news talk shows through the years in The Windy City. After retiring from WMAQ-TV Channel 5 news as the political editor/news reporter in 2006, Kay returned to the Chicago and Illinois political scene on WCPT radio in 2008 and held a weekly gabfest for all things political on Saturday afternoons. He was never shy about his style of reporting and was not afraid to call out the leading political figures in Chicago and throughout the state of Illinois and politicians nationally.

Mr. Kay, nicknamed "Doogie" held political forums in Chicago and elsewhere in recent years on his radio program, including an event at a local union hall in Chicago in 2009 (pictured on the right in the upper left hand photo with the late, great broadcaster Ed Schultz) for a labor forum during former President Barack Obama's first term.

Rest In Peace Dick Kay.

Justice Prevails In George Floyd Murder Case

Former cop Derek Chauvin is led away in handcuffs.
GUILTY !

At long last, a cop is going away for a long time for murdering someone.

That cop is Derek Chauvin from Minneapolis, Minnesota and there is at long last justice for the murder of George Floyd last May.

There have been so many others who were killed and almost without exception, the accused cops  were either acquitted or faced lesser charges in the cases. One notable exception was Jason Van Dyke in Chicago, who is behind bars for murdering Laquan McDonald in 2014 in Chicago, so this was a long time coming after the way Chauvin so smugly looked at the cameras as he knelt on Floyd's neck and literally squeezed the life from that man.

Justice prevails . . . at last.

Major League Baseball - 2021 Season Preview

After last year's shortened 60-game baseball season due to the still ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the game of baseball is looking forward to a more traditional season beginning on April 1 and continuing (hopefully uninterrupted) through the summer months and into October for the playoffs and World Series.

Last year the Los Angeles Dodgers won it all, capturing their first World Series championship since 1988 while looking very dominant in the process, beating the Tampa Bay Rays in six games. The Dodgers seem to be the odds on favorite to win the World Series again this year, which would make them the first repeat champion in Major League Baseball since the 2000 New York Yankees if that happens.

Repeating is never easy in any sport, especially baseball with the long schedule and the multiple rounds of playoffs. Plus the fact the San Diego Padres have reloaded their roster with free agent signings and players acquired in trades to compete with the Dodgers in the National League West division. Once the season gets rolling, it will be fun to see how things turn out once October rolls around.

For a look at the divisional races and post-season forecasts, Heftyinfo will attempt to break things down and pick the World Series champions for the 2021 MLB season.

National League

East

1. Atlanta - The Braves appear poised to win their third consecutive division title, but the East is loaded.

2. Washington - If this team stays healthy, they could contend for the title again.

3. NY Mets - They look good on paper, but the Mets must prove they can be a winning team.

4. Philadelphia - Bullpen issues a year ago must be resolved if Phillies hope to make playoffs.

5. Miami - BIG difference between 60 games and 162 games. Back to reality in 2021 for the fish.

Central

1. St. Louis - The Cardinals have big potential, now they have to get it done on the field.

2. Chicago Cubs - Don't write this team off just yet.

3. Milwaukee - The Brewers could finish anywhere from first to third in this division race.

4. Cincinnati - The Reds have some holes to fill this season.

5. Pittsburgh - The Pirates will try to avoid the 100-loss mark this season.

West

1. LA Dodgers - World Series or bust once again for the Dodgers.

2. San Diego - Very hyped up team. Can they take bigger steps and make the World Series this year?

3. San Francisco - The Giants could finish anywhere from third to fifth in the NL West.

4. Arizona - The Diamondbacks are looking to be a .500 team this season.

5. Colorado - The Rockies traded their best player, but still have some punch in the lineup.

American League

East

1. NY Yankees - If they can avoid injuries and the starting pitching comes through, look out.

2. Toronto - Blue Jays ready to take flight once again this season.

3. Tampa Bay - Last year's surprise team will be hard pressed for a repeat effort in 2021 season.

4. Boston - The Red Sox get their manager Alex Cora back this season.

5. Baltimore - The Orioles have a lot of young talent, but still a couple of years away from contending.

Central

1. Minnesota - The Twins seem to find ways to win, until the post-season that is.

2. Chicago White Sox - Losing Eloy Jimenez hurts, but this team is loaded and can go far this year.

3. Cleveland - The Indians will try for one last hurrah before the team's name change next year.

4. Kansas City - The Royals could surprise some folks in the 2021 season.

5. Detroit - Rebuilding yet again it seems, but also with some veteran players still around.

West

1. Oakland - The A's just seem to come through when it counts and make the playoffs.

2. Houston - The Astros will need steady pitching if they want to contend this year.

3. LA Angels - Will Mike Trout and company make the post-season this year?

4. Seattle - Young team that is on the rise.

5. Texas - The Rangers are looking toward the future and will likely have a rough year.

National League Playoffs

Wild Card - San Diego over Washington

Division Series - Los Angeles over San Diego; Atlanta over St. Louis

NLCS - Los Angeles over Atlanta

American League Playoffs

Wild Card - Chicago over Toronto

Division Series - Chicago over NY Yankees; Oakland over Minnesota
