OUTLOOK FOR 2024 - Seattle fell off from 2022 and missed the playoffs last year, but quarterback Geno Smith still had a decent season and is back in the fold for the upcoming year. New head coach Mike Macdonald takes over for Pete Carroll, who left after fourteen seasons with the Seahawks.

The offense wasn't anything special in 2023, averaging 21.4 PPG and finished 21st in total offense, gaining 323 yards per game. The running game lagged behind (93 YPG) as the 28th ranked rushing attack in the NFL. DK Metcalf leads the wide receivers and veteran Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba provide Smith with solid targets as well.

The defense was a far cry from the old days of the Legion of Boom Seattle teams a decade ago, finishing 30th overall (371 YPG allowed) and giving up 23.6 points per game. Against the run, the 'Hawks allowed 138 YPG, which ranked 31st in pro football. Seattle did have 11 interceptions and 47 sacks last season, but too often allowed big plays that led to blowout losses, including twice against divisional foe San Francisco. Replacing safeties Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs will be a challenge and up front, the defense has to figure out a better way to stop opposing ground games.

This team can make a challenge for a wild card spot in the NFC, but things will have to go just right it seems for that to happen. The 49ers and L.A. Rams are the stalwarts in the division, so don't expect Seattle to win the West and the Arizona Cardinals look to be improved, so the Seahawks will have to work to stay out of the NFC West cellar. It will be a year to learn a new system after so many strong seasons with Carroll on the sidelines.

Stay tuned.
