Jared Goff is the quarterback and passed for 3,245 yards last year with 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Tim Boyle is the backup. The wide receivers are led by Amon-Ra St. Brown, who had 90 receptions for 912 yards and five touchdowns while DJ Chark comes over from Jacksonville this year. Josh Reynolds and rookie Jameson Williams (Alabama) are also in the mix. The tight ends are T.J. Hockenson (61, 583, four TD), Garrett Griffin and rookie James Mitchell (Virginia Tech). The running backs are D'Andre Swift (617 rush yards, 4.1 YPC average and five TD along with 62 receptions, two TD) and Jamaal Williams, who rushed for 601 yards (3.9 YPC) and scored three times.
On defense, Charles Harris led the Lions with 7 1/2 quarterback sacks a year ago and is back at defensive end along with top rookie pick Aidan Hutchinson (Michigan) and linebacker Julian Okwara (five sacks). Defensive backs Tracy Walker III (108 tackles) and Will Harris (93 tackles) are back along with corners Jeff Okudah and Amani Oruwariye, who had six interceptions last season.
Outlook for 2022 season - The Lions picked up steam late last year, winning three of their final six games and are looking to to improve yet again in the 2022 season now that QB Jared Goff has a year under his belt with the team after five seasons with the Los Angeles Rams. Head Coach Dan Campbell is an energetic coach who wants to see this team take the necessary steps to move up in the NFC North division, where the Green Bay Packers continue to dominate.
Playing better defense (Lions only had 30 sacks and eleven interceptions last season) would be a big plus as the team finished 30th in scoring defense. That has to improve and the offense must be more efficient in the red zone after averaging 19 points per game. The team should win more than just three games this season and could move past the Chicago Bears in the division race. Anything more would be a bonus as the Lions continue to look to build a better future.
