NFL - Week Four Preview

The action around the NFL started on Thursday night in Cincinnati with the host Bengals knocking off the Miami Dolphins, 27-15. Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was injured in the game and had to be carted off the field. No word yet on his condition, but the loss knocked the Dolphins from the ranks of unbeaten in the NFL.

As for the unbeaten teams, only the Philadelphia Eagles remain so (3-0) and they will host the surging (and surprising) Jacksonville Jaguars, who have outscored their last two opponents by a whopping 62-10 count. Nobody could have guessed the Jags (2-1) would blast the Los Angeles Chargers on the road, but that is what happened last week (38-10 beat down) and prior to that, the Jaguars shut out the Indianapolis Colts, 24-0 and their defense leads the league with a plus-seven in the takeaways category.

The Eagles have been on a roll and lead the NFC East division so far this season. Quarterback Jalen Hurts has four touchdown passes and also has run for three additional scores to lead the offense. Meanwhile, Jags QB Trevor Lawrence has made tremendous leaps this season after a rough rookie season. He has six TD passes and just one interception through the first three games and last week he carved up the Chargers secondary, which boasts All-Pro safety Derwin James and (All-Pro) cornerback J.C. Jackson.

The Buffalo Bills (2-1) travel to play the Baltimore Ravens (2-1) in what should be an exciting game that could go down to the final minute. Buffalo lost a nail biter in Miami last Sunday while the Ravens rode the arm and legs of QB Lamar Jackson in a win at New England. Jackson has ten TD passes so far in 2022 and has also rushed for a team high 243 yards with two touchdowns.

Bills quarterback Josh Allen has passed for 1,014 yards in three games with nine scoring passes and two interceptions. He can run a little bit too and has a team high 113 yards on the ground with one touchdown. The big question in this one is whether either team can get the ground game going to complement the passing attack. Also, the Ravens defense has struggled while the Bills have been steady.

On Sunday night, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will host the Kansas City Chiefs with both teams at 2-1 and coming off tough losses. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes struggled last week against the Colts and would like to get it going early against Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers lost, 14-12 against Green Bay and Tom Brady had a late TD pass, but he has been held in check without his top receivers so far this year. The Bucs will have Mike Evans back, but Chris Godwin is still a game time decision to play.

On Monday night, the NFC West will be on the "prime time" stage as the Los Angeles Rams (2-1) and San Francisco 49ers (1-2) will do battle in Frisco. After being embarrassed at home in the opening game, the Rams have responded nicely with a pair of wins, including a 20-12 triumph against the Arizona Cardinals and QB Matthew Stafford is looking to get it going so far this season. He has four TD passes and five interceptions and will look to get the ball spread around. Wide receiver Cooper Kupp already has 28 receptions through three games.

The 'Niners have had trouble scoring in their first three games, totaling just 47 points this season. They scored ten in the opening loss in Chicago, then scored ten again last weekend in a loss to Denver. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has been hot and cold in his two games since taking over for injured starter Try Lance. The 49ers defense has been solid, giving up just 36 points so far. All in all, expect a typical game between these two foes that will likely be close and decided with the final drive.

As for the rest of the action in Week Four, the following offers a look in the capsule style format and the Heftyinfo picks will follow.

Minnesota (2-1) vs. New Orleans (1-2) (Game is being played in London, England) - The Vikings rate the edge with Saints missing top wide receiver (Michael Thomas) and perhaps starting QB (Jameis Winston) in the game across the pond.

Chicago (2-1) at N.Y. Giants (2-1) - Who would have thought these two teams would be above .500 at this point? But here they are and this one will be close.

Cleveland (2-1) at Atlanta (1-2) - The spunky Falcons will give the Browns a battle and could even come out on top.

Washington (1-2) at Dallas (2-1) - The Cowboys are riding the wave of reserve quarterback Cooper Rush. The Commanders will look to shake things up in this one.

Seattle (1-2) at Detroit (1-2) - The Lions have been putting up big numbers on offense, unfortunately so have their opponents. The Seahawks have gone flat the past two weeks.

Tennessee (1-2) at Indianapolis (1-1-1) - Can the Colts move into first place after this one after so looking so bad in the first two games? The Titans have been so-so in the first three games.

N.Y. Jets (1-2) at Pittsburgh (1-2) - The Jets could have their starting QB back this week. The Steelers still have theirs entering this game.  Toss up here.

L.A. Chargers (1-2) at Houston (0-2-1) - The Chargers roster resembles a MASH unit heading into this one. Don't be surprised if the Texans come away with the win.

Arizona (1-2) at Carolina (1-2) - Yawn.

New England (1-2) at Green Bay (2-1) - The Patriots lost their starting QB to an ankle injury and Packers QB Aaron Rodgers is getting it heated up after a rough start. Take the Packers.

Denver (2-1) at Las Vegas (0-3) - This will be the week the Raiders put it together and get a win.

NFL - Week Three Recap

Dolphins players celebrate a big win over the Buffalo Bills.
A lot of nutiness around the NFL this week as surprises (perhaps not so much though in the modern day version of the NFL) once again took place with the Kansas City Chiefs losing in the final minute to the Indianapolis Colts, the Los Angeles Chargers being embarrassed at home against the first place (AFC South division) Jacksonville Jaguars and the Miami Dolphins holding off the Buffalo Bills in a crazy game in Miami to take over first place in the AFC East.

The Dolphins improved to 3-0 as they beat Buffalo, 21-19 despite Bills quarterback Josh Allen passing for 400 yards with two touchdowns and being outgained by the Bills to a 497 yards to 212 count in total offense. The Bills (2-1) had a chance to pull it out after the Dolphins muffed a punt attempt from their own end zone that resulted in a safety. The Miami defense then was able to prevent Buffalo from getting into field goal range as time ran out. Dolphins RB Chase Edmonds had a pair of rushing touchdowns to go with a TD pass from QB Tua Tagovailoa.

The Indianapolis Colts (1-1-1) got a late touchdown pass from QB Matt Ryan to beat Kansas City, 20-17 as he hooked up with tight end Jelani Woods on the 12-yard scoring strike with 24 seconds left to make the difference, and then the Indy defense got an interception to preserve the win. The Chiefs (2-1) held a 17-13 lead in the fourth quarter, but an unsportsmanlike penalty on Kansas City gave the Colts a first down after a sack brought up fourth down to keep the winning drive going. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes had a TD pass and interception in the loss.

In Chicago, the Bears (2-1) beat the Houston Texans, 23-20 as Cairo Santos kicked a 30-yard field goal as time ran out. That followed a clutch interception deep in Houston territory by linebacker Roquan Smith (16 tackles in the game) with 1:04 remaining. Bears RB Khalil Herbert rushed for 157 yards and had two rushing touchdowns to pace the offense, which included 281 rushing yards. Houston fell to 1-2 as QB Davis Mills had 245 passing yards with a TD strike and two picks thrown in the tough loss.

The Tennessee Titans (1-2) knocked off the visiting Las Vegas Raiders, 24-22 in a battle of winless teams behind scoring runs by RB Derrick Henry and QB Ryan Tannehill, who also had a TD pass and 264 passing yards. Raiders QB Derek Carr had a pair of scoring passes (and one interception) and 303 passing yards. His second TD pass went to WR Mack Hollins from nine yards with 1:14 remaining to make it close, but the potential tying two-point conversion attempt failed, dropping the Raiders to 0-3 this season.

Cincinnati (1-2) got their first win, 27-12 against the New York Jets with QB Joe Burrow throwing for three scores and 275 yards while the Bengals defense limited the Jets (1-2) to four field goals while getting four sacks and four turnovers (two fumbles and two interceptions).

The Philadelphia Eagles bolted out to a 24-0 halftime lead against host Washington and cruised to a 24-8 victory to improve to 3-0 this season. Eagles QB Jalen Hurts (340 passing yards with three TD tosses) led the way along with WR DeVonta Smith (eight receptions for 169 yards and TD). The Commanders (1-2) couldn't solve the Eagles defense, which recorded NINE QB sacks in the win.

The Jaguars smacked the Chargers around on Sunday in L.A.

The Jacksonville Jaguars (2-1) demolished the host L.A. Chargers, 38-10 as QB Trevor Lawrence (262 passing yards and three TD) and company rolled up 413 yards in total offense with a balanced attack, including a 50-yard TD run by running back James Robinson, who rushed for 100 yards. Chargers QB Justin Herbert (297 pass yards with one TD and one INT and a fumble) played despite suffering a severe rib injury last week, but the Chargers (1-2) offense was ineffective as they never were in this one.

The Baltimore Ravens (2-1) got another big game from QB Lamar Jackson (218 passing yards with four TD passes and a rushing touchdown to go with 107 yards on the ground) as they beat the host New England Patriots, 37-26. Patriots QB Mac Jones threw three interceptions and suffered a leg injury late in the loss that dropped the Pats to 1-2 so far this season.

The Carolina Panthers (1-2) got into the win column, 22-14 against the New Orleans Saints (1-2) behind a 67-yard TD pass from QB Baker Mayfield to Leviska Shenault, three field goals by kicker Eddy Pineiro and a 44-yard fumble return by Marquise Haynes for a touchdown. Meanwhile, Saints QB Jameis Winston had 353 passing yards with a TD and two interceptions in defeat.

In a wild finish in Minnesota, the Vikings (2-1) toppled the Detroit Lions, 28-24 as they scored a touchdown with 45 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to overcome a ten-point deficit that dropped the Lions to 1-2. Vikings QB Kirk Cousins had two TD passes (including the 28-yard game winner to wide receiver K.J. Osborn) along with 260 passing yards in the win. Lions RB Jamaal Williams scored two rushing touchdowns while QB Jared Goff had a TD pass and one interception along with 277 passing yards, but it wasn't enough to win.

On Thursday night, the Cleveland Browns beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, 29-17 for a home victory to improve to 2-1 behind 113 rushing yards and a touchdown by RB Nick Chubb and a pair of TD passes from QB Jacoby Brissett. Steelers RB Najee Harris and QB Mitch Trubisky each had a rushing touchdown in the loss, which dropped them to 1-2 this season.

Green Bay (2-1) held on for a 14-12 road win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-1) as their defense was able to refute the Bucs two-point attempt to tie things up after QB Tom Brady (271 passing yards)  hooked up with WR Russell Gage on a one-yard TD pass with just 14 seconds remaining. Packers QB Aaron Rodgers had two TD passes in the first half to help make the difference.

Seattle and Atlanta hooked up in a back and forth affair with the Falcons (1-2) getting a hard fought 27-23 win on the road. The Seahawks (1-2) had a chance late after a fumble recovery in the final minutes, but the Atlanta defense rose to the occasion to preserve the win. Falcons QB Marcus Mariota passed for 229 yards and one touchdown while RB Cordarrelle Patterson ran for 141 yards and had one score on a 17-yard run. Seahawks QB Geno Smith had 325 passing yards and two TD passes and one interception in the loss.

The Los Angeles Rams (2-1) knocked off the host Arizona Cardinals, 20-12 as QB Matthew Stafford had 249 pass yards and RB Cam Akers and WR Cooper Kupp each scored a rushing touchdown. Arizona fell to 1-2 as they managed just four field goals while QB Kyler Murray passed for 314 yards in the losing effort.

The Sunday night game in Denver saw the defenses dominate as the Broncos (2-1) defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 11-10 with neither team gaining 300 yards in total offense. 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo had a TD pass and one interception as well while the Broncos got a touchdown on a one-yard run by Melvin Gordon III with 4:10 remaining in the fourth quarter to give Denver the 11-10 lead. The two-point conversion attempt failed. The 49ers had one last chance, but a sack and then a fumble recovery by Broncos defensive back Kareem Jackson on a completed pass on the next play sealed the win for Denver in the final minute.

In the Monday Night Football game, the Dallas Cowboys defeated the New York Giants, 23-16 on the road with reserve QB Cooper Rush throwing a go ahead one-yard TD pass to WR CeeDee Lamb midway through the final quarter to break a 13-13 tie. The Cowboys (2-1) trailed by seven points late in the third quarter following a 36-yard TD run by Saquon Barkley that gave the Giants (2-1) a 13-6 lead. But RB Ezekiel Elliott scored on a one-yard run to tie the game prior to the fourth quarter heroics of Lamb.

NFL - Week Three Preview

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns kicked off Week Three on Thursday night and the host Browns won the game, 29-17 to take over first place in the AFC North division.

There are quite a few games on tap this week that merit special recognition, most of all the Buffalo Bills at Miami Dolphins (both teams are 2-0) with first place in the AFC East on the line. It's early in the 2022 NFL season, but this one could very well go a long way in determining the winner of this division. The Dolphins have been a pleasant surprise, especially in the wake of their huge come from behind win at Baltimore last week.

The Bills have steam rolled both of their opponents as they crushed the Los Angeles Rams (31-10) in L.A. to open the season and last Monday night, they beat down the visiting Tennessee Titans, 41-7 as quarterback Josh Allen had four touchdown passes. Miami QB Tua Tagovailoa threw for six touchdowns in his teams 42-38 victory over the Ravens. This game could be a shootout that will likely be decided in the final possession.

The Green Bay Packers (1-1) travel to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-0) on Sunday afternoon as Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady get to square off yet again. However, both teams have key wide receivers who are out for this game with injuries or else are suspended, as is the case for Bucs WR Mike Evans, who shoved Saints defensive back Marshon Lattimore during last Sunday's game and was ejected.

Both of these teams are favored to be among those in the hunt for the NFC title and a trip to the Super Bowl next February. The Bucs rate the slight edge being at home, but the defenses will likely have a pretty big say so in how the outcome of this one will go.

The Los Angeles Rams (1-1) have looked sluggish so far in 2022 and they will face the Arizona Cardinals (1-1) in the desert state this Sunday. The Cardinals had a big comeback win last week in Las Vegas against the Raiders (29-23 overtime victory) as QB Kyler Murray led the way with two touchdowns in the final quarter. The Rams were able to hold off the Atlanta Falcons in a close game after being embarrassed by Buffalo in the season opener. Quarterback Matthew Stafford will need to take charge against the Arizona defense for the Rams to come away with the win. Meanwhile, look for the L.A. defense to get after Murray so he cannot exploit the secondary as he did in the fourth quarter last week.

The Sunday night game features the Denver Broncos (1-1) playing host to the San Francisco 49ers (1-1) as Russell Wilson and company will look to get the offense in gear. But the 49ers defense is solid and didn't give up any points to Seattle (Wilson's former team) last week in a 27-7 win. The Broncos defense has been stellar so far in two games, but will be going against Jimmy Garoppolo, who is back in the starting role for San Francisco following the season ending ankle injury to QB Trey Lance. This one could go down to the wire, as so many games seem to do these days in the modern day NFL.

The rest of the action for Week Three is broken down in the capsule style format and the Heftyinfo picks for all the action follows up.

Houston (0-1-1) at Chicago (1-1) - The Bears should win this one at home, but the Texans have shown they are no easy opponent so far this season.

Las Vegas (0-2) at Tennessee (0-2) - Who would have thought these two teams would be winless so far this season? The loser will be looking at insurmountable odds for the post-season.

Kansas City (2-0) at Indianapolis (0-1-1) - Take the Chiefs.

Detroit (1-1) at Minnesota (1-1) - The battle for first place in the NFC North division, where all four teams are 1-1 this season. The Vikings rate a slight edge at home in what could be a high scoring game.

Philadelphia (2-0) at Washington (1-1) - Can the Commanders find a way to ground the Eagles? This game will be closer than you might think.

Baltimore (1-1) at New England (1-1) - Two so-so teams in the first two weeks will battle it out in this one. Toss up.

Cincinnati (0-2) at N.Y. Jets (1-1) - The Jets got a miracle to win a game last week while the Bengals lost at the buzzer. Joe Burrow and company can't start out 0-3, can they?

New Orleans (1-1) at Carolina (0-2) - The Saints should win this one, but the Panthers have played pretty good defense in their two losses, both of which were lost by a field goal in the fourth quarter.

Jacksonville (1-1) at L.A. Chargers (1-1) - The big question for this game is whether Chargers QB Justin Herbert will be ready to play (rib injury) and even if he does, the Jaguars have shown resilience in their first two games.

Atlanta (0-2) at Seattle (1-1) - This game could go either way.

Dallas (1-1) at N.Y. Giants (2-0) - The Monday night game featuring NFC East rivals. Can the Giants get to 3-0? Will Dallas be able to follow up last week's effort with backup QB Cooper Rush? Toss up in this one.

NFL - Week Two Recap

Jets QB Joe Flacco celebrates game winning TD pass with Garrett Wilson
Fantastic finishes were the order of business for Week Two around the NFL as no less than three teams gave away big fourth quarter leads. The New York Jets scored twice in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter to shock the host Cleveland Browns, 31-30 when quarterback Joe Flacco threw touchdown passes to wide receivers Corey Davis (66 yards) and a game winning 15-yard strike to rookie Garrett Wilson with just 22 seconds left. A recovered onside kick by the Jets set up the heroics. The Browns led 30-17 after running back Nick Chubb (87 yards) scored his third rushing TD of the game with 1:55 remaining. But the extra point was missed and that proved to be the difference in the final outcome as both teams now have 1-1 records.

The Arizona Cardinals (1-1) literally ran away with a win against the host Las Vegas Raiders when defensive back Byron Murphy, Jr. scooped up a fumble and raced 59 yards for the winning score in overtime as the Cards beat the Raiders, 29-23. It capped off a huge rally in the fourth quarter as they scored 16 points on two touchdowns and two-point conversions to force the OT session. Cardinals QB Kyler Murray scored on a three yard TD run with no time left to get the score to 23-21. Murray then threw a pass to the back of the end zone to WR A.J. Green to tie it up. Las Vegas QB Derek Carr had a pair of TD passes in the loss as the Raiders (0-2) coughed up a 20-0 halftime lead.

The Miami Dolphins (2-0) outdid them all in their come from behind win, 42-38 at Baltimore. Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa (pictured left) had SIX touchdown passes (and two INT) along with 469 passing yards in the huge comeback as Miami put up 28 points in the fourth quarter. The Ravens led 28-7 late in the second quarter after QB Lamar Jackson threw for his third TD pass of the game. The Ravens also led 35-14 after three quarters, thanks to Jackson scoring on a 79-yard run. It was all Miami after that as Tagovailoa connected twice with WR Tyreek Hill (11 receptions for 190 yards) for scores and also threw the go ahead TD with just 14 seconds remaining on a seven-yard pass to WR Jaylen Waddle (pictured above celebrating with Tua), who also had two TD grabs along with 11 receptions for 171 yards.

As for the rest of the action, the Kansas City Chiefs won 27-24 at home against the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday night as they rode a pair of TD passes from QB Patrick Mahomes and a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown by rookie DB Jaylen Watson.  Early in the fourth quarter, Watson did his thing to give the Chiefs (2-0) a 24-17 lead. The Chargers (1-1) jumped out a 10-0 lead and later led 17-7 following a pair of TD passes by QB Justin Herbert, who had three scoring passes in the game along with 334 passing yards. Chiefs kicker Matt Amendola added a 31-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter to give the Chiefs a 27-17 lead before the 'Bolts scored with 1:11 remaining on the TD pass from Herbert to WR Joshua Palmer to account for the final score.

The Sunday night game was all Green Bay Packers (1-1) as they throttled the visiting Chicago Bears, 27-10 behind a pair of scoring passes from QB Aaron Rodgers and a rushing TD by Aaron Jones, who also had a TD catch and ran for 132 yards in the win. The Packers defense had three sacks and an interception as well. The Bears lone touchdown was a three-yard run by QB Justin Fields, who attempted just eleven passes and passed for only 70 yards (with one INT) as the Bears fell to 1-1 in the loss.

The Detroit Lions improved to 1-1 with a 36-27 home win against the Washington Commanders (1-1) as QB Jared Goff had four TD passes and rookie defensive end Aidan Hutchinson had three sacks to lead the way. Detroit led 22-0 at the half before the Commanders made it interesting with QB Carson Wentz (337 yards passing) throwing for three scores to get the score to 29-21 with 10:39 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Lions put the game away (36-21) as Goff hooked up with WR Amon-Ra St. Brown for a second TD in the game with seven minutes left.

The Los Angeles Rams (1-1) held off the Atlanta Falcons (0-2) for a 31-27 win at home as they nearly squandered a 28-3 lead. Rams QB Matthew Stafford had three scoring passes to offset two TD passes by Falcons QB Marcus Mariota and a blocked punt return for another touchdown.

The Jacksonville Jaguars (1-1) shut out the visiting Indianapolis Colts, 24-0 behind a solid defense that limited the Colts (0-2) to just 218 total yards and also had five QB sacks and three interceptions of Indy QB Matt Ryan. Jags QB Trevor Lawrence had two TD passes and RB James Robinson scored on a 37-yard run to pace the victory, which put Jacksonville in first place in the AFC South.

The New York Giants improved to 2-0 in the young season with a hard fought 19-16 home win against the Carolina Panthers (0-2) when kicker Graham Gano made a 54-yard boot with 3:34 remaining in the fourth quarter. It was all field goals in this game except for one TD pass from each QB as (Panthers) Baker Mayfield connected with WR D.J. Moore for a 13-6 lead and (Giants) Daniel Jones hit tight end Daniel Bellinger on a 16-yard TD pass to tie the game in the third quarter.

The Dallas Cowboys (1-1) avoided an 0-2 start to the season with a 20-17 home victory against the Cincinnati Bengals (0-2) as kicker Brett Maher made a 50-yard game winning field goal as time ran out. The Bengals stormed back from a 17-3 deficit as Evan McPherson made two field goals and then QB Joe Burrow threw a five-yard scoring pass to WR Tee Higgins with 3:45 left to play in the game. The two-point conversion was successful to tie the game at 17-17 before the 'Pokes drove downfield on the game winning drive behind backup quarterback Cooper Rush, who also had a TD pass in the win.

Tampa Bay (2-0) broke open a tight game (tied 3-3) in the fourth quarter on a 28-yard TD pass from QB Tom Brady to WR Brett Perriman and then safety Mike Edwards had a "pick six" 68-yard interception return to give the Buccaneers a 20-3 lead en route to a 20-10 road win at New Orleans. Saints QB Jameis Winston had a TD pass, but also threw three interceptions in the loss, which dropped his team to 1-1 with the setback.

The Denver Broncos (1-1) won a snoozer at home, 16-9 against the Houston Texans (0-1-1) as QB Russell Wilson had a TD pass of 22 yards to TE Eric Saubert early in the final quarter to go with three field goals from Brandon McManus. Texans kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn had three field goals in the loss.

The New England Patriots (1-1) got a 17-14 road win against the Pittsburgh Steelers (1-1) as QB Mac Jones had a TD pass and RB Damien Harris a two-yard scoring run while the defense got two turnovers and three sacks to lead the way. Pittsburgh QB Mitch Trubisky had a TD pass (and one INT) in the loss.

The San Francisco 49ers (1-1) rolled over the visiting Seattle Seahawks, 27-7 behind a strong defense that limited Seattle (1-1) to 216 total yardage in offense while quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo came off the bench for injured starter Trey Lance (season ending ankle injury) and threw for a touchdown and also had a one-yard scoring run to help make the difference. Seattle's only TD came on a blocked field return of 85 yards by DB Michael Jackson.

In the Monday night games (yes, there was two of them this week), the Philadelphia Eagles (2-0) beat the visiting Minnesota Vikings, 24-7 behind two rushing touchdowns by QB Jalen Hurts, who also passed for 333 yards with one TD and one INT to pace the win. Minnesota fell to 1-1 as QB Kirk Cousins was intercepted three times while the Vikings managed just 264 yards in total offense  . . . Meanwhile, in Buffalo, the Bills absolutely demolished the Tennessee Titans, 41-7 as QB Josh Allen had four TD passes to help the team improve to 2-0 this season. Three of the four TD passes were to WR Stefon Diggs, who had 12 receptions for 148 yards. Bills linebacker Matt Milano had a 43-yard interception return for touchdown as the defense held the Titans (0-2) to only 187 yards in total offense, which included allowing (RB) Derrick Henry just 25 rushing yards on 13 carries. The Bills also forced four turnovers (two INT and two fumble recoveries) in the easy win.

NFL - Week Two Preview

The Thursday night game streams to football fans rather than being aired on NFL Network (or CBS, NBC, etc. affiliates) and that seems to be the way sports is going in the future. Regardless of how it is aired to fans across the country, the game of football is still basic and simple.

It's football.

The Kansas City Chiefs host the Los Angeles Chargers in the Thursday night game and it should be a shootout once again as Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs look to outscore Justin Herbert and the Chargers. The Chiefs put up 44 points on the Cardinals last weekend while the Chargers defense made life miserable for the Las Vegas Raiders and quarterback Derek Carr in a 24-19 victory. Mahomes had five touchdown passes while Herbert threw for three touchdowns in their respective teams win.

The teams split the two games a year ago and it could happen again this season. But tonight (in Kansas City) the Chargers will be without their best wide receiver as Keenan Allen is nursing a sore hamstring and that could be a big factor as the number two wideout for L.A. (Mike Williams) was uncharacteristically quiet last week, making just two receptions for a measly ten yards. That won't cut it against the Chiefs and if Herbert and Williams don't make the big plays, it could lead to a tough night for L.A. and an easier win than expected for the Chiefs.

Another big game early in this 2022 season is on Sunday in New Orleans between the Saints and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a team New Orleans has owned in recent times, winning the last four games between them. Bucs QB Tom Brady has had a tough go against the Saints since he took over for the team two years ago and would like to see things be different in this NFC South tilt. The team that has the ball last could win this one.

The Miami Dolphins will get a tougher test this week when they travel to face the Baltimore Ravens in what could be a lower scoring game as both teams feature strong defenses. Quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa (Miami) and Lamar Jackson (Baltimore) can take off  and make things happen when the passing options aren't in range and both teams could run the football if needed. This game could very well go down to the wire and be decided by a field goal.

The San Francisco 49ers will look to rebound at home against the Seattle Seahawks, who surprised the Denver Broncos on Monday night in a squeaker. The 49ers got stuck in the mud last Sunday in Chicago as a torrential down pour throughout the game limited their offense and they lost, 19-10 to the Bears. Quarterback Trey Lance wants to atone for the dismal effort while the Seahawks would like to get a second straight win with strong defense.

The Sunday night game features the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers up in Wisconsin at Lambeau Field. The Bears defense will look to get after Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers, who had a rough opening game against Minnesota, getting sacked four times and throwing an interception and no touchdown passes in the 23-7 loss.

The Minnesota Vikings play the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night and this could be a high scoring game in Philly with the running game being a strong point for both teams. The Eagles piled up 216 rushing yards last week in a 38-35 road win in Detroit and had four rushing touchdowns. Minnesota ran for 126 yards and feature back Dalvin Cook gained 90 rushing yards in their victory.

All in all, it looks to be another week of possible surprises (Heftyinfo had a rough opening week with an 8-7-1 pick 'em record) around the NFL. But that is why they play the games and anything can and usually will happen in the games. The following will provide a brief analysis of the action this week and the picks for all 16 games appear as well.

L.A. Chargers (1-0) at Kansas City (1-0) - Chiefs should win this game, but it won't be easy as the Chargers defense showed something last week against the Raiders.

N.Y. Jets (0-1) at Cleveland (1-0) - The Browns squandered a big lead last week, but managed a last second win in Carolina. The Jets were blown out by Baltimore in their opener. Look for another victory for the Browns.

Washington (1-0) at Detroit (0-1) - The Lions are looking to restore the roar and the Commanders could be just the thing for that to happen this Sunday in Motown.

Tampa Bay (1-0) at New Orleans (1-0) - Tom Brady and the Buccaneers have to beat the Saints at some point don't they? But the Saints will have something to say about it for sure.

Carolina (0-1) at N.Y. Giants (1-0) - What's this? The New York Giants at 2-0 in the early part of the season? It could very well happen, but Baker Mayfield and the Panthers felt they had one stolen away last week and will be ready in this one.

New England (0-1) at Pittsburgh (1-0) - The Steelers and the Patriots . . . not the marquee matchup it once was.

Indianapolis (0-0-1) at Jacksonville (0-1) - The last time the Colts played the Jaguars, they got crushed and were knocked out of playoff contention. But that was with a different quarterback, so can Matt Ryan make the difference this time around?

Miami (1-0) at Baltimore (1-0) - This one could be the most exciting game of the week. Look for the Ravens to pull it out late.

Atlanta (0-1) at L.A. Rams (0-1) - After the debacle in their home opener, the Rams are angry and the Falcons could be the recipients of that. But the Falcons are also smarting after blowing a big lead  and losing in their home opener.

Seattle (1-0) at San Francisco (0-1) - The 49ers need this game. Seattle is riding high after their big win on Monday night. Toss up.

Cincinnati (0-1) at Dallas (0-1) - Not to many people thought BOTH of these teams would be winless entering this game. Bengals should get it done with Dallas missing Dak Prescott (thumb surgery) for the next couple of months.

Houston (0-0-1) at Denver (0-1) - The Broncos need to let Russ cook and get it done this time against a Texans team that showed a lot of spunk against Indianapolis last week.

Arizona (0-1) at Las Vegas (0-1) - Early season game between two teams that need a win to avoid possibly being two games back already. Take the Raiders.

Chicago (1-0) at Green Bay (0-1) - Aaron Rodgers owns the Bears . . . but maybe not this time. Toss up here.

Tennessee (0-1) at Buffalo (1-0) - In this Monday night game, the Bills should have their way against a Titans team that looked totally inept in the second half of a loss to the Giants. The Bills crushed it in their big win against the defending champion L.A. Rams.

Minnesota (1-0) at Philadelphia (1-0) - The Eagles can score points, but they also give up a lot of points. The Vikings showed they can have balance on offense and their defense gets after people. Toss up in this game.

NFL - Week One Recap

The Chicago Bears celebrate their splashy win against the 49ers.
The 2022 NFL season is underway and it started last Thursday night in Los Angeles where the defending Super Bowl champion Rams hosted the Buffalo Bills. And in the second half, it was all Bills as they won, 31-10 with quarterback Josh Allen (297 passing yards) throwing for three touchdowns and rushing for another one to lead the way. He also threw two interceptions, but the Bills defense intercepted Rams QB Matthew Stafford three times along with seven sacks to help out in the rout.

The Chicago Bears surprised the visiting San Francisco 49ers, 19-10 at drenched and soggy Soldier Field behind a pair of TD passes from Justin Fields. The rain poured down continuously in Chicago and 49ers QB Trey Lance had no answers as the Bears defense shut them down in the second half.

The Pittsburgh Steelers, with Mitch Trubisky (194 passing yards and one TD pass) starting at quarterback, stunned the host Cincinnati Bengals, 23-20 in overtime thanks in big part to the defensive effort (especially safety Minkah Fitzpatrick) that had seven sacks and four interceptions and a fumble recovery. Fitzpatrick had a pick six interception for the game's first score and he also blocked the extra point kick to send the game into the OT session. Cincy tied the game at 20-20 when QB Joe Burrow (338 yards, two TD, four INT) threw a six-yard TD pass to Ja'Marr Chase with two seconds remaining. Both teams missed field goals in OT before Pittsburgh kicker Chris Boswell made a 53-yarder as time expired to get the win.

The Los Angeles Chargers beat the visiting Las Vegas Raiders, 24-19 in a total team effort as QB Justin Herbert threw for three scores (279 passing yards) and linebacker Khalil Mack had three sacks, including the game clinching takedown of Raiders QB Derek Carr (295 yards, two TD, three INT) with under two minutes remaining. The Chargers defense had six sacks and three interceptions to aid the winning effort.

The Minnesota Vikings toppled the visiting Green Bay Packers, 23-7 as QB Kirk Cousins (277 passing yards) had a pair of TD passes to wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who had nine receptions for 184 yards and the two scores. Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers was intercepted once and was limited to just 195 passing yards while also being sacked four times.

The Kansas City Chiefs rolled the host Arizona Cardinals, 44-21 behind five touchdown passes from QB Patrick Mahomes, who had 360 passing yards in the rout. The Chiefs had a 37-7 lead midway through the third quarter as they totaled 488 yards in offense. The Cardinals got a pair of TD passes from Kyler Murray in the losing effort.

The Philadelphia Eagles held off the host Detroit Lions, 38-35 as four different players scored rushing touchdowns and the defense added a TD on a 27-yard pick six from cornerback James Bradberry. The Lions fell behind 31-14 before a pair of TD passes by QB Jared Goff helped make it close in the final quarter, but the Eagles got the win while amassing 455 yards in total offense.

The Atlanta Falcons blew a 16-point fourth quarter lead at home as the New Orleans Saints won, 27-26 when Will Lutz kicked a game winning 51-yard field goal with 19 seconds remaining. The Saints got a scare in the final seconds as the Falcons got a chance to win, but kicker Younghoe Koo's 63-yard field goal attempt was blocked as time ran out. New Orleans QB Jameis Winston had a pair of TD passes in the late rally.

The Miami Dolphins bested the visiting New England Patriots, 20-7 with linebacker Melvin Ingram scoring on a two-yard fumble return and QB Tua Tagovailoa tossing a 42-yard TD pass to wide receiver Jaylen Waddle. The Patriots turned the ball over three times in the loss.

Washington won at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars, 28-22 with QB Carson Wentz throwing four TD passes (along with 313 pass yards) to help lead the way. The Commanders got the winning score on a 24-yard TD pass from Wentz to rookie WR Jahan Dotson with 1:46 remaining. Jacksonville QB Trevor Lawrence had a scoring pass and one interception in defeat.

The Baltimore Ravens won in New York, 24-9 against a listless Jets offense that didn't score a touchdown until the final minute of the game. Ravens QB Lamar Jackson had three scoring passes in the win as his team cruised to the victory, including two of them to WR Devin Duvernay.

The New York Giants stunned the Tennessee Titans, 21-20 to get the road win as running back Saquon Barkley had a huge game, going off for 164 rushing yards and scoring a touchdown and getting into the end zone on a shovel pass from QB Daniel Jones on the two-point conversion to clinch the win. The Titans had a chance to win it, but kicker Randy Bullock was wide left on the 47-yard field goal attempt as time ran out. Titans QB Ryan Tannehill had two TD passes in defeat.

The Cleveland Browns squeaked out a 26-24 road win against the Carolina Panthers as kicker Cade York drilled a 58-yard field goal to win it with eight seconds left to play. The Panthers took a 24-23 lead when Eddy Pineiro made a 34-yard FG with 1:13 remaining. Browns RB Kareem Hunt scored twice on the ground and Nick Chubb had 141 yards rushing to lead the charge in a team effort for 217 rushing yards. Carolina QB Baker Mayfield had a rushing and passing touchdown in the loss against his former team.

The Sunday night game saw the Tampa Bay Buccaneers go into Dallas and dominate the Cowboys, 19-3 with Tom Brady throwing a TD pass to WR Mike Evans and kicker Jeff Succop connecting on four field goals to pace the win. Dallas lost starting QB Dak Prescott to a thumb injury (throwing hand) and he is likely out for at least six to eight weeks.

There was also a tie game in the opener as the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans finished at 20-20 in Houston. The Texans had a 20-3 lead in the final quarter but the Colts stormed back with RB Jonathan Taylor (two-yard scoring run along with 161 rush yards) and QB Matt Ryan (352 passing yards) getting a 15-yard TD pass to Michael Pittman along with a 27-yard FG from Rodrigo Blankenship, who also missed from 42 yards in the OT session. The Texans got a pair of TD passes from QB Davis Mills while building up the lead. The Colts rolled up 517 yards in total offense, but had to settle for the tie.

The Monday Night Football game saw the host Seattle Seahawks defeat the Denver Broncos, 17-16 to spoil the return of former quarterback Russell Wilson. Seattle QB Geno Smith had a pair of touchdown passes and 195 pass yards while Wilson had one TD pass and 340 pass yards. Broncos kicker Brandon McManus made three field goals, but was wide left on the potential game winning 64-yard field goal attempt in the final 20 seconds.

NFL - Week One Preview

The NFL season for 2022 kicks off tomorrow night as the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams will host the Buffalo Bills in what could be a shootout, although both teams have solid defense which could make it a low scoring affair. Either way, football is back once again.

There are numerous divisional games on Sunday in the opener for the rest of the league as the Minnesota Vikings will host the Green Bay Packers in an NFC North tilt. The Pittsburgh Steelers face the Bengals in Cincinnati, where the defending AFC North champions will be looking to make a return trip to the Super Bowl this year. In recent years, teams that lost the Super Bowl usually have a tough go of things the following season.

Meanwhile in the AFC East, the Miami Dolphins will host the New England Patriots while in the NFC South, the New Orleans Saints will travel to face the Atlanta Falcons. Indianapolis travels to face the Houston Texans in an AFC South game and the Colts want to atone for blowing their chance to make the playoffs last season. The Los Angeles Chargers face the visiting Las Vegas Raiders in the loaded AFC West division to open the season. These two teams met in Vegas in the final regular season game last January and the Raiders were able to pull out the win on a field goal as time expired to make the post-season and keep the 'Bolts out of the playoffs.

The Sunday night game features Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers playing in Dallas against the Cowboys in what could be a high scoring game. These two teams exited the NFC playoffs sooner than expected last season and would like to get things going in the right direction in Week One. The Monday night game will be interesting for sure as the Seattle Seahawks host the Denver Broncos and none other than quarterback Russell Wilson will be the focus as he faces his former Seahawks team and the vaunted "12th Man" crowd in the Great Northwest.

The first week of the season is usually the most difficult to predict because there's really no concrete sample of the team yet. In recent years, most teams keep the key players on their team off the field in the pre-season games, so it's hard to gauge what might happen in that first game of the regular season.

Now it's on to the previews (in capsule style format) for the first games this weekend and of course, the Heftyinfo picks for Week One will follow up.

THURSDAY NIGHT OPENING GAME

Buffalo Bills at Los Angeles Rams - The Bills and the Rams . . . pick 'em game in this season opener.

SUNDAY GAMES

New Orleans Saints at Atlanta Falcons - The Saints looking to rebound with top players returning from major injuries last year. Falcons looking to be in rebuild mode.

Cleveland Browns at Carolina Panthers - Carolina quarterback Baker Mayfield had this one circled on his calendar seconds after he was traded from the Browns.

San Francisco 49ers at Chicago Bears - The Bears could give San Francisco a battle in this one.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Cincinnati Bengals - Joe Burrow and the Bengals should roll in this one.

Philadelphia Eagles at Detroit Lions - All the hype surrounding the Eagles heading into the new season, but beware the Lions.

Indianapolis Colts at Houston Texans - C-O-L-T-S . . .  Colts !

New England Patriots at Miami Dolphins - Take the Dolphins.

Baltimore Ravens at New York Jets - The Ravens have a lot to prove after their crash landing in 2021 regular season. Jets are just looking to get off the field healthy after already losing their starting QB in pre-season.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Washington Commanders - This one could go down to the wire. Take the Commanders at home.

Kansas City Chiefs at Arizona Cardinals - Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs should get this one against Kyler Murray and the Cardinals.

Las Vegas Raiders at Los Angeles Chargers - Unlike the 2021 season finale in January, there is no tie game effect on this one. Look for a high scoring affair with the Raiders pulling off the mild upset late in the game.

Green Bay Packers at Minnesota Vikings - If not now, when Minnesota Vikings?

New York Giants at Tennessee Titans - The Titans should roll in this season opener.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Dallas Cowboys - The Sunday night "prime time" game. Will this be the year that Tom Brady (and the Bucs) sees Father Time catch them? The Cowboys could start that trend in this one.

MONDAY NIGHT GAME

Denver Broncos at Seattle Seahawks - Broncos QB Russell Wilson returns to where he played for the past ten seasons. This game should be a good one as the Seahawks have a lot to prove without Russ cooking at the quarterback position.

Fearless Forecasts For 2022 NFL Season

Hard to believe, but it's that time of the year again  . . .  Football.

The NFL season kicks off on Thursday night when the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams host the Buffalo Bills, a team that many people are picking to win it all this year.

The Rams held serve last year when the post-season began after a strong finish in the regular season and then won a close game against the upstart Cincinnati Bengals in the Super Bowl as quarterback Matthew Stafford got the monkey off his back that he couldn't win the big one.

In 2022, there are so many questions as the season looms, including can the Rams repeat? The last Super Bowl champ to do that was the 2004 New England Patriots. It won't be easy, but the Rams can if they stay healthy and Stafford follows up on what he was able to do last year.

Another question is whether the Bills can get over the fact they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs as their top ranked defense allowed two late scores in the closing minutes that led to an overtime loss in the divisional round. What a wild game that one was.

Can Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a bounce back season after being dethroned by the Rams in the NFC playoffs last year? How about the Cincinnati Bengals? Will QB Joe Burrow have more magic this time around to make the playoffs? The AFC is absolutely loaded and in particular, the West division where Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs), Derek Carr (Raiders), Justin Herbert (Chargers) and now Russell Wilson (Broncos) are the starting quarterbacks.

Can Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers finally get back to the Super Bowl for the first time in twelve years? How about the Dallas Cowboys? They seemed to be keeping time on a sun dial as it ran out on them in the NFC playoffs against the San Francisco 49ers last January.

It will be interesting to see what develops, but here goes nothing in picking the AFC and NFC division races and forecasting the playoffs and eventual Super Bowl winner.
