What a country!

Here we are in the month of May, 2010 already and there are so many things to discuss in both the sports world and the politics of our great country.
Starting off, congrats are in order for Super Saver on winning the Kentucky Derby yesterday on the sloppy track of Churchill Downs. Ice Box (my pick) finished second and Paddy O' Prado showed for third. Jockey Calvin Borel won his third Kentucky Derby in the last four years, which is a new standard for horse racing excellence.
The NBA and NHL playoffs are in full swing with the Cleveland Cavs and "King" James rolling to a 101-93 victory over the Boston Celtics last night in Game One of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals.
In the NHL, the Chicago Blackhawks were thrashed by Vancouver at the United Center in the Windy City, 5-1 and trail 1-0 in the Western Conference Semi-Finals to the Canucks.
The Boston Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers, 5-4 in OT to jump out to a 1-0 lead in their best of seven series in the East.
How great would it be to see two of the "Original Six" go at it in the Stanley Cup Finals? The Blackhawks, Bruins, Montreal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings all are still in the NHL playoffs.
Moving to politics (sort of in this case), the White House Correspondents' Dinner took place last night and President Barack Obama rocked the house preceding emcee Jay Leno with his speech and hurled some good natured jabs at the GOP as well as some of those in his own administration.
On a more serious note, the oil spill in the Gulf Coast is a terrible thing and for anyone to blame Obama and call it his "Hurricane Katrina" is way off base seeing it was Halliburton (anyone remember Dick Cheney?) that was the party responsible for the platform that BP was using when the explosions took place last week in which 11 workers are now presumed dead after missing for all this time.
Going to Arizona?
You may want to bring your papers with you or else risk being detained and/or arrested by the cops in the state as the result of the new state law that requires the finest of Arizona to stop and check ID of anyone deemed suspicious of being an illegal immigrant.
This has set off a firestorm and will definitely be closely watched leading up to the mid-term elections this November.
And speaking of controversy, locally (in Chicago) it's business as usual as a judge allowed key evidence to be tossed in a DUI case involving a Chicago cop who got behind the wheel of his vehicle (off duty) in 2007 after drinking at a local bar (he was seen on surveillance film downing shots just before the time of the accident) and smashed up with another vehicle that resulted in two young men being killed.
Strange but if that were an "ordinary" citizen, they'd be in deep doo-doo right now and that is the third time in recent history here in Chi-Town that a judge has gone easy on the men in blue when it comes to breaking the law.
The other cases involved a drunken off duty cop beating the tar out of a petite bar maid because she courageously refused to serve his drunk ass any more booze.
The other was the case where the same judge allowing the evidence to be tossed for the DUI case ruled in favor of Chicago cops who for whatever reason got into a brawl with other patrons at (surprise, surprise) a drinking establishment.
What is it with cops and booze? Apparently they do not mix too well.
Anyway, things are rolling along and there will surely be more fireworks as President Obama will be announcing a selection for the United States Supreme Court soon and the NHL and NBA playoffs continue to advance.
It's going to get interesting in this grand, old country we call the United State of America.
Enjoy!
